Haurra MadariToken.PNG Madari Lorea Melokotoi-Baratz is a human sorceress. She is 4'3", 85 lbs, and 29 years old. Her birthday is 4-2 Heavenfall 921 FI. She is abnormally short in stature for a human and her mother attributes this to her being a fragile baby and child. She has light brownish blonde hair, dark greenish blue eyes and medium mocha skin (inherited from her mother who has a slightly darker skin tone).

She has a pet bat named Dominic who serves as her familiar. She found him in the chapel while at the University of Fresia.

Since her birth she has been called MadariToken.PNG Madari (mah-DAR-ee) as it is tradition in her mother's family for the first name of females to be largely ceremonial.

Madari is played by HelenAngel.

SPOILER: Madari's Character Sheet

History

MadariToken.PNG Madari was born to Tikoak ("Tiki") Melokotoi and Enbor Bernard Baratz. She is the youngest of nine children. Her mother is the oldest daughter of a prosperous fruit and spice merchant while her father is one of seven siblings who inherited his family's fruit orchards.

The Merchant and The Farmer

The Melokotoi family is known for peddling their wares to towns all up and down the Rimen river. While initially only selling imported fruit at the beginning, as the family grew their wares grew as well. During the Fourth Interregnum, the family found that despite the population of Fenefeld growing the demand for fruit was not what it was. Dorrea Melokotoi, the family matriarch and shrewd businesswoman, uncovered that the wealthy Baratz family had moved into the area to avoid war taxes in western duchies and purchased a large area of land. There they cultivated pear orchards and opened store in Fenefeld with not only fresh pears but wines, jams, compotes, and pastries also from their pear cultivars. Dorrea attempted to approach the patriarch of the Baratz family but due to his paranoia of being discovered for draft and war tax dodging, he refused all meetings.

After the turmoil following the Fourth Interregnum had passed, Tiki attempted to succeed where Dorrea had not. Young and beautiful, she quickly charmed one of the heirs, Enbor Baratz. While the official story told is that the two fell in love and thus began the perfect union of farmer and merchant, Tiki's sister believes that the courtship and romance was strictly business strategy to gain access to the Baratz pear empire. After Tiki and Enbor were married, Tiki shut down the Baratzs' shop in Fenefeld and instead had their pears and pear products distributed through the Melokotoi Trading Company.

Baratz Pear Products

Unlike his brothers, Enbor actually preferred to tend to his orchards himself and enjoyed the quiet and simplicity of their house at the orchards. Tiki, however, became a staple of the small but glitzy Fenefeld socialite scene and they purchased a manor in Fenefeld proper where she spent most of her time "attending to business." After the birth of their sixth child, Enbor insisted the children be raised at the house on the orchards in order to experience a more "wholesome" childhood in pastoral settings. Tiki would bounce back and forth between the houses but preferred to leave the child rearing to her husband and the nannies. After the birth of their eighth child, Tiki began spending more and more time in Arabelle in order to strike up a deal with the prominent Zapadri trading family there. After a lengthy stay, she returned to the orchards and complained of feeling ill. Tiki was actually pregnant, though took care to not publicize this fact. Rumors swirled about due to Tiki's "surprise" pregnancy, her lengthy dalliances with the Zapadri halfling merchant in Arabelle, and Madari's substantially smaller size compared to her siblings. If Enbor had any doubts about Madari's paternity, however, he did not show it and adored the little girl as he did all his children.

Childhood

The orchards and manor where Madari was raised

As both the youngest and by far the smallest, Madari was constantly tailing after her older siblings. The age difference also played a role, as her closest sibling was a brother 5 years her senior.

Her siblings in age order:

  • Dorrea "Calendrille" Melokotoi-Baratz Blutsen (16 years older)
  • Antonija Agnija ("Aggie") Sorjenz (15 years older)
  • Miran Estera ("Tera") Doroteja Melokotoi-Baratz (13 years older)
  • "Denis" Primoz Melokotoi-Baratz (11 years older)
  • Evzen ("Evz") Rostislav Melokotoi-Baratz (10 years older)
  • Braniz ("Branz") Jevrem Baratz (8 years older)
  • "Erik" Rihard Baratz (7 years older)
  • Vlad "Drago" Baratz (5 years older)

She spent the most time with Drago and her father, though Tera often took on a motherly role towards her. She spent her days playing in the orchards and her evenings being educated with her siblings. Her father doted on her, which occasionally garnered the disdain of her eldest sister, Calendrille. As Calendrille mimicked her mother in both attitude and appearance, she was far from her father's favorite.

Teenage Years

Madari was awkward and shy and, unlike her sisters, held little interest in cotillions, balls, and other social events that her mother attempted to parade her at in order to find her a "suitable" suitor. She preferred reading, going to bookstores with her brother, and entertaining her father with little magic tricks. Her father at first discouraged her, fearing her manipulative mother would notice and try to capitalize on it, but then realized his daughter had a true gift. After finally convincing her it would be for the best, she set off with her brother to the University of Fresia to develop her magic and study the arcane arts. Drago, ever protective of his little sister, also enrolled at the university but in woodworking in hopes to branch out the family business into wood items and furniture from pearwood.

Adulthood

As Madari's talents increased, so did her confidence. Her brother left the University after completing his woodworking degree and founded the Baratz Pearwoodworks in Fenefeld. Madari excelled at her studies and went on to complete her Magister Degree as well as her Master of Craft in Arcane Studies.

The Fall of the Families

After receiving her Master of Craft degree, she returned to help father with the orchards after he fell in a picking accident. His fall rendered him unable to walk and this drained their family of their wealth and resources- not only on healers to help him as much as they were able but also on adjustments to the house to accommodate his lack of mobility. Her brothers rallied together and sold their lands to return to the family orchard and work on it as Enbor could no longer afford to hire workers.

Tera moved in to the family home to help care for their father as did their brother Branz. After the harvest, Eyz and Denis returned to working as ferrymen for their mother's family. Erik and his wife Sonja moved to Arabelle where they opened a small bakery, specializing in pear-based pastries. Calendrille barely visited her father throughout his recovery, instead trying to glean information in order to help her mother's petition for divorce. Aggie visited with her father and then returned to her husband Gorbel in Gildenhome.

Enbor's accident was the last straw that broke an already broken marriage. Tiki formally applied for a dissolution of marriage and in the process requested ownership of the orchards. This infuriated the rest of the Baratz family, who had constantly looked upon Tiki with disdain due to her treatment of both Enbor and her immediate closure of the family shop after her and Enbor's marriage. The two families begun a bitter feud that caught Madari and her siblings in the middle. While the town magistrate refused Tiki's claim and reasserted Enbor's ownership of his orchards, the contracts between Baratz Pear Products and Melokotoi Trading Company were at the center of a heated dispute. Both families spent a vast majority of their wealth on lawyers fighting the other's claims to pears and pear products from the Baratz orchards.

The contracts are still in dispute which has left pears rotting in storehouses and Melokotoi Trading ferries bypassing Fenefeld. Tiki and Franz (Enbor's oldest brother) continue to fight over the rights to the pears and have nearly bankrupted their family businesses in the process. It is the opinion of many in Fenefeld that the disputes are more about revenge and personal feuds than about anything else at this point.

A Mother Scorned

Aggie and her husband, Gorbel

In addition to the legal disputes directly following her divorce, Tiki was angered due to her failure to utilize Tera to further the family business. She had arranged strategic marriages for her other daughters Calendrille (to the son of a apple orchard farmer) and Aggie (to an elderly mine owner) but was not able to do so for Tera (primarily due to Tera secretly being a lesbian). Attempting to get one more strategic marriage out, she sent droves of suitors to Madari's flat above her brother's furniture store. In order to make the visits stop Madari chose the least offensive one, a ferryman owner's son named Georg. He was gone often and therefore she rarely had to see him. Drago became increasingly worried about his sister and her lack of sense of purpose, as well as her "arranged" marriage.

Soon after Madari's betrothal, rumors in town emerged of Georg being a playboy and constantly cheating on Madari. Drago enlisted his father's help and the two had a heart-to-heart with Madari about her depression and miserable relationship. Refreshed by her father and brother's support, she broke off the engagement. While she had very little communication with her mother before, she broke off ties from her mother entirely and like her other siblings who sided with her father, wishes to drop her mother's last name from hers.

Unfurnished Business

Madari was helping Drago with his small furniture store but Drago knows that his sister can do better than peddle pearwood. He encouraged her more and more to venture out of the store and her flat. Utilizing her solid work ethic against her, he convinced her to walk around town every day and look for unfurnished places and then talk to them about the furniture store. Madari has been venturing out of the flat and more and more, and Drago hopes she will find something that will make better utilization of her talents.

While doing this, she came across a house which contained naught but a well-dressed woman looking frightened and some tables. She approached the woman and eventually got her to reveal that the woman and her husband were ambushed while moving the rest of their belongings to Fenefeld from Arabelle. Madari went to the tavern to seek help and could only recruit a rather young and slightly foolish fighter. Together they somehow managed to defeat the brigands and retrieve both the wagon with the belongings and the woman's husband who was taken captive. The fighter was impressed with Madari's abilities and word began to spread around Fenefeld about the talented sorceress in town, the product of the two fighting families. She began to use her magic more and more to help supplement the town guard, though some were afraid of her and her abilities.
