D20Token.pngGame Master In our last episode, the party has returned to Walker's Shade after successfully acquiring Booberries to heal the Walgorg son. To their horror, they find the village ravaged, buildings burnt, and their wagons ransacked.

Background

Walker's Shade Razing
  • The village appears mostly deserted (it didn't have many residents to start with).
  • Three town homes are burnt.
  • The church was empty and partially burnt.
  • The party searched for someone to ask about the tragedy.

  • Party found Jolfrana and Walgorg, Jr in the old/dusty/condemned Inn & Tavern.
  • Jolfrana claimed that the party led the ruffians here and many lives were takened/ruined by the problems these visitors brought here.
  • Jolfrana was calmed down by Merry's solid diplomacy skills.
  • The party gave the booberries to Jolfrana, and she begins brewing her local remedy.
  • Merry, Mahina, Temptest, and Ugly work to find survivors, calling Nora to heal as appropriate.
  • Nora stays to assist Jolfrana and Book remains as well.

Bot RP Discussion

NoraToken.PNG Nora (botted/helping Jolfrana) Were you hurt when the town was assaulted?

JolfranaToken.jpg Jolfrana Thankfully, I wasn't hurt, but I can't say the same for the rest of the village. Whatever trouble you guys cooked-up, it has boiled over onto the rest of us.

NoraToken.PNG Nora So, what happened while we were gone?

JolfranaToken.jpg Jolfrana The next day after you left, two hunters appeared, sneaking around. Two of our teen boys were headed out logging and found them lingering outside the south side of town. When asked what they were doing, they said they were looking for friends driving a wagon that got lost in the area. The boys didn't like their look and told them to scram, as we don't like outsiders around here.

NoraToken.PNG Nora (botted) Did the boys explain what they looked like?

JolfranaToken.jpg Jolfrana No, but I saw them first-hand the next day-- I was out tending to the church gardens. Three hunters wearing studded leather armor, bows, small swords-- and they looked pretty ready to cause trouble. After the teens warned me, I had been suspecting trouble so I had been keeping my old wand tube at-the-ready.

They asked me if I had seen some guys of your likeness, and pointed over to the wagons. Asking if you were here. I told them that the church does not discuss sanctuary seekers and that they should be on their way. Oh, they didn't think much of that and one of them ventured a smirk and stepped too close to me, menacingly. He said I better give them the crossbow.

I didn't know what he meant, but I stared that poor fellow down. I commanded him in the name of Alexandria to flee. Oh, he was running off to the forest, lickety-split. When his two friends looked back at me, their surprise doubled at the sight of the hexing end of a wand pointed at them.

They scurried off and that's all I saw of them that day.

BookToken.PNG Book (botted) So, those three fools came back and torched the village? How did they manage that?

JolfranaToken.jpg Jolfrana (shakes her head solemnly) Oh, they came back twice more, but it wasn't them folk who torched the town.

After that, I asked the menfolk of the village to be vigilant and asked for Gensiel, our best woodsman, to sit with me in the church at night until you returned.

Well, two days later, those fellows returned, but this time they looked frightened, disheveled and were in tow of a large dark-skinned warrior and a few other large cityfolk and their dogs. The warrior was shirtless, with a dozen lash marks on his back-- the whipping appeared to have been recent.

They came straight to the church, but we were alerted by one of the village children before they got here. We bolted the front door. Three of our beefiest loggers also made their way to the church to offer us support as the outsiders approached.

From one of the upstairs church windows, I asked them what they wanted.

They said they came for a ragtag bunch of murderers, who had run from Arabelle and may be sneaking around these parts. I told him that they didn't look like city officials to me and that they should just head on back to town.

The black man started walking towards the wagons, but I yelled at him that even if they were city officials, the church sanctuary laws outweigh any order they may have. I know you're not lawmen, but you are a fool if you disregard the Church's hallowed grounds.

BookToken.PNG Book (botted) So then they destroyed the wagons?

JolfranaToken.jpg Jolfrana (shakes her head again) No, actually, that stopped them. The man looked up at me when I warned about the Church. He shook his head and glared at me. 'We got no problem with the Church, but tell those guys that they can't hide in there forever. Eventually they will come out and we have to ask them about their sick old lady friend and what she may have told them. They also have a cane of my boss's that he'd like back.'

Well, I don't know what he was talking about, since you had brought me a sick man, not a lady. But I didn't let on. They waved away those silly hunters who were glad to be on their way-- and fled out of town much like they did when I sent them out. The city ruffians headed over to the general store and walked away with a couple of jugs of ale as they left town.

I found out later, though-- that afternoon they rough-housed one of the teens in the woods who revealed which direction you guys headed. They took off with their dogs leading the way, but that was 4 days ago. I assumed you would run into them. Did they catch up with you?

NoraToken.PNG Nora (botted) We didn't see them while we were traveling-- they didn't find us and we didn't find them.

JolfranaToken.jpg Jolfrana Well, we haven't seen those guys since, so they're probably still looking.

BookToken.PNG Book (botted) Wait, so they're not the ones who burnt the town?

JolfranaToken.jpg Jolfrana (goes a bit white as she stirs a mixture, swallows, and continues) No, the tragedy happened the night before last and we've been hiding here since. Late at night, our volunteer watcher that evening, Glart-- he screamed out so viciously, so suddenly-- it put the entire town on alert. We heard one scream, and that was the last we heard of him.

Assuming the worst, I began warding the church as best as I could. I watched from the windows as what looked like savages were burning some of the homes. In the light of the fires, I saw that a hugely muscular humanoid dragged four humans on chains behind him. I recognized two of those captives as the hunters from the previous visits. They led them around like dogs. They also (she swallows hard again) had two feral or barbarian children with them on chains.

They laughed, screamed-- it was like a vision out of nightmares. These vile people seemed to revel in the chaos. For example, they would let go of the chains to watch the captives run, only to run after them like sport, tie them to a tree and beat them while laughing. Some of our farmers approached and were killed quickly-- almost casually. It was one of the most horrific nights of my life.

One of the terrible folk had similar face tattoos as a few of the others, but he was more refined, in dark robes. Yet he still seemed at home in the chaos behind him. This man approached the church and called to those of us inside. He asked for Merry by name, and said that Merry owed him a Gedanken-- or something. He yelled and asked if Merry liked 'my Arbahg' and that he should come out soon before the entire town is destroyed.

He said that the 'tribe was unhappy' or something, and motioned to the two chained barbarian children. He walked over, removed their chains, and said something to them that I couldn't understand. They began running for their life--- some of the savages chased them into a farmhouse where I hoped someone was inside to protect them.

But then the pursuers... they simply barricaded the house's doors from the outside, and set the house on fire.

The robed man looked back towards the Church and said that Merry should come out now, please.

I yelled from the window the same warnings about the Church sanctuary, but this man bellowed a laugh that sent chills down my spine. He used magical gestures I haven't seen before, and a column of fire burst from the sky and set the Church ablaze.

(starting to cry and shake now) The Church! Those blasphemers were using spells to assault hallowed grounds!

I heard the man instruct someone to overturn your wagons, but that was the last I cared to listen to. I knew then that the Church was no longer safe. We made our way here secretly and hid in the basement. We've been here ever since. I've gone out a few times to heal wounded, but have been trying to stay out of sight, in case they return.

Additional RP Discussion

D20Token.pngGame Master After that, Jolfrana cured Wolgorg and he awoke. Book and Nora fill-in the others with the above story when they return from searching for more survivors. Jolfrana asked that the party leave town-- the townsfolk will bury the dead on their own. If you have more questions to ask Jolfrana or the remaining townsfolk, you can use the RP discussion below to do that.
