Rare Spells

Any spell that is not included in the base SRD is considered a "rare" spell. This includes all of the spells contained on this wiki[1]. These spells, as their name implies, are extremely uncommon and jealously guarded by those who have mastered them. The rules for acquiring such spells are slightly different, as noted below.


Getting Rare Spells

Divine Casters do not automatically have all rare divine spells added to their spell lists. Instead, when a divine caster gains a new level that increases spells per day, the caster may pick a single rare spell to add to his or her spell list. This spell must be one the character can legally cast, both in terms of spell level and casting restrictions. For rare domain spells, a cleric may choose to swap out their domain spell for the rare domain spell as their rare spell choice. But, in any case, a cleric may never have more than one spell provided to them per spell level from any one domain.


Wizards may have the option to pick a rare spell as one of his or her two selections upon gaining a new caster level. When gaining a new level, the Wizard must first succeed on a Spellcraft check equal to 15 + the Spell Level of the spell to be learned. If he does, he may select a Rare spell. If he does not, the selection must come from the standard spell list.


Sorcerers, Bards, and other Spontaneous Casters may select rare spells as normal when allowed to select new spells. However, such a caster may one select one rare spell per caster level, no matter how many spell selections the gained level allows.


Psions, Psychic Warriors, and other Psionic Classes may chose rare powers as normal when allowed to select new powers. However, such a manifester may one select one rare power when gaining a level, no matter how many power selections the gained level allows.

Rare & Unavailable Spells

Due to the metaphysics and/or tone of the setting, some higher-level spells from the SRD are considered RARE spells, and while others are simply unavailable through any but the most special channels. Changes to the SRD spell listings can be found below. Psionic versions of these spells operate under the same restrictions.

  • Summon Monster may be used to summon outsiders. These outsiders - even demons, devils, archons, etc. - are not being pulled from the Outer Planes. They are planar refugees that were trapped behind the Veil on an inner plane thousands of years ago.
  • Limited Wish, Wish, and Miracle can be used to access any spell - including rare or (sometimes) unavailable spells - as per spell description.
  • Planar Binding and Planar Binding, Lesser are rare spells. Cannot be used to access out planes.
  • Contact Other Plane is a rare spell. Can be used to contact outer planes. The amount this behavior is frowned by the church cannot be stressed enough.
  • Dweomer of Transference is a rare spell.
  • Psychic Turmoil is a rare spell.
  • Plane Shift is a rare spell, and caster cannot access outer planes.
  • Gate is a rare spell, and caster cannot access outer planes.
  • Planar Ally and Planar Ally, Lesser are rare spells. Cannot be used to access outer planes.
  • Raise Dead is unavailable.
  • Resurrection is unavailable.
  • True Resurrection is unavailable.
  • Reincarnation is unavailable.

The Veil

If an outsider somehow is pulled through the Veil, it becomes cut off from its home plane. If it is destroyed on any plane inside the Veil, that outsider is permanently destroyed. Any intelligent outsider will realize this state of affairs instantly upon arriving to a plane inside the Veil.

Magic/Psionic Transparency Spells

Resist Poison => 1st Level Power

Detect Psionics, Magical => 2nd Level Spell (Sor/Wiz, Bard, Magic Domain, Mind Domain)

Detect Magic, Psionic => 1st Level Power

Dispel Psionics, Magical => 4th Level Spell (Sor/Wiz, Bard, Magic Domain, Mind Domain)

Dispel Magic, Psionic => 4th Level Power

Power Resistance, Magic => 6th Level Power (Sor/Wiz Only)

Spell Resistance, Psionic => 6th Level Power

Greater Dispel Psionics, Magic => 7th Level Spell (Sor/Wiz, Magic Domain, Mind Domain)

Greater Dispel Magic, Psionic => 7th Level Power
