The group subdued, Kib Absold and the others set to work pressing them for information. The Bard was woken up first, and after a bit of back and forth, admitted that he and the others were not there for mere looting, but instead said that they were investigating an incident scryed from afar by a Fresian prince. He then insisted that the party heal up the others, give them back their equipment, and let Kib and his band help them. Kib tabled the suggestion, to be considered later, and went on to question a fighter. He was completely unhelpful, saying nothing but the repeated statement of his name. The Mage was next, and his attitude made him out to be the leader of the group. He was similarly unhelpful, convinced that the party would end their lives after getting the information they needed. With no information with which to trust the others, and nothing else to go on, Kib and company decided to let the Bard lead them on, and leave the others.

The Bard ended up uncooperative, insisting that he be armed. Even when given his short sword, he continued to protest, repeating vociferously that he needed his other equipment. Regardless of the little threat the Gnome posed, the party knew he could be dangerous armed if the right situation came up, and opted to keep his equipment at hand, ostensibly to pass to the Bard in the event he would need it. This upset the Bard greatly, and his agitation was quite clear.

They set off from Draglet, heading Northwest, to Draglet Fortress. The night passed seemingly without event, but in the morning, it was discovered that the Gnome had slit his own wrists, ending his own life. The party took the time to dispose of his corpse, then took a second look at the items they were carrying, particularly two scrolls that the Gnome had loudly pleaded to be allowed to carry. One was deciphered as a Remove Disease spell, but the other could not be made out, and would have to be studied further. By noon, the party had finished what they had set out to do, and continued on their way.

Time passed, the dreadful silence oppressive on the ears of the party, until Draglet Fortress could be spied in the distance. To the West, however, was a sight none in the party had ever seen--concentric rings of trees, many singed, and many others pushed into the ground, in a circle wider than could be seen from their vantage point. The party decided to detour to investigate. As they meandered through the wreckage, the trees became more and more uniformly blasted, more uniformly charred, until, after some miles of picking through broken terrain, a great pile of trees and rubble blocked the path. Eager to see what could have caused such destruction, Anise leaped atop the pile, to see a massive crater, devoid of any vegetation and almost perfectly spherical. The cause of the blast was not evident, but from her vantage point, Anise could make out a hacked-out path in the woods to the North. With little other choice, the party headed in that direction.

The path ended up being a great highway, cut out at great expense of time and labor. Tracks in the ground showed the laborers to be Dwarves, and a large object had been dragged along behind them, evidently heading in the direction of the Fortress. The path converging on their already intended destination, the party once again followed in the clearly indicated direction.

As dusk approached, they finally encountered it, a squat, glowering hulk of stone bulging out from a sheer rock face, in classic Dwarven style. They drew nearer, and as they did, they could hear all around them the slight moaning of the undead. This continued for some while, until suddenly, at some unknown signal, a group of zombies began to converge on the party, attacking them from all directions. Conventional zombies came first, then, while the group was engaged, two Screechers leaped from the shadows at Gnob and Thed. Gnob was killed instantly, and, their flanks exposed, the rest of the group worked hastily to disentangle themselves from the less-dangerous zombies to take care of the more pressing threat. This eventually happened, and the party emerged from the quick mêlée relatively unscathed, but with the grim promise of much more to come. Kib took a quick moment to mourn the loss of his attaché, then pressed on with the rest of the group, Anise attempting to pick a path to the Fortress wall without disturbing any more of the foul-smelling former Dwarves.

Goods

  • Identified one of the scrolls previously looted from the looters as a Remove Disease scroll. The other scroll is still unidentified.

Experience

  • 700 for the level 5s (350 for Gil, being regented)
  • 800 for the 4s

Notes

  • From now on, Thed does not take a watch.
    • To be fair, his spot is on the rise. Also, I have a feeling that if Thoven was on watch, and had made the spot check to notice the suicide attempt, his response would have been something along the lines of, "Remember, UP the veins, not ACROSS."
