Ualrick

  • The party removes itself and its captive from the burning barn's locale.
  • They awaken their captive. He reticently introduces himself as Ualrick.
  • He initially isn't very forthcoming. Kib tries to coax information out. Marwynn does the "bad cop" thing.
    • Specifically, she uses Blood of the Martyr on him. It freaks out pretty much everyone, but especially Ualrick.
    • He says he's the Headsman's second-in-command. Kib later figures he's exaggerated that role somewhat.
    • He's really keen to get his rapier back (and with that, Slitherrr accidentally gets the Pun Hit Wonder achievement). The party ignores this pretty thoroughly.
    • He (reluctantly) offers to take the party to meet his boss.
  • With that, the party is off to the grand seat of the Bandit Kingdom.

Nia-Agliare

  • A half-days journey without incident sees the party to Nia-Agliare.
  • A "Watch" of some sort is manning the gates and exacting a "peace bond" from entrants. It's 100 per person--Kib sweet-talks it to 50, and Thed and Gilerl find their own ways in.
    • Thoven gets in some good snark here via invisibility
    • These guards are not particularly disciplined or capable
    • The tokens are emblazoned with a shark with butterfly wings. It is the symbol of one of the capos (Abs said Bloody Kate, but I think redacted it to be Grimm Gallant, since this is his town)
  • Ualrick leads the party to an inn in the formerly Odessan-occupied quarter ("The Lion of Odessa"). Kib thinks the choice of name a bit ironic.
  • Anise hangs out with the mounts, preferring not to be surrounded by people.
  • It's a bustling tavern, with all kinds of wickedness to be had.
  • Thoven disguises himself and moves to make himself inconspicuous.
  • Some moments pass while Tana negotiates with the bartender a bit. After some time, the Headsman emerges.
  • As Gnob's Folly suspected, it is Levan. Reunion ensues.
    • Levan is genuinely surprised that Kib stands before him--he thought someone had set up an ambush (most likely by torturing something useful out of Tana), and the welcoming party reflected that. This latter point is enunciated with disappointment toward Ualrick, who does not look happy with this turn of events.
      • (for good reason, because he is most likely killed shortly after)
  • Levan talks about the political situation nearby. There is some sparring back and forth--Kib wants to continue his crazy errand, with Levan, and Levan sees no future in Odessa.
    • Over the course of this, Kib finds out that Hogran has been hanged, and Teila most likely imprisoned along with Garn. The news hits him hard
    • Levan proposes that a more stable leadership of Nia-Agliare could brighten the local situation considerably. Kib figures there are bigger fish to fry.
    • Conversation ends as he offers to do what he can about finding passage West for the group
  • The party hangs around for a bit. Kib looks disappointed, even though he expected the outcome.
  • Eventually, they reunite with Anise. Anise, briefed, brings up that Levan kind of has a point, and that their ends might be better served by creating a stable base of operations in the area. Kib resists at first, but comes around to her point of view, as the day passes.
  • Marwynn has business to attend with the Hadriarch.
    • She questions him about his feelings with the Crusade. He's clearly uncomfortable talking about something that could put him at the edge of heresy, but makes it clear that there are a lot of people who worry that it is an overreach.
    • He seems like a nice guy, a weary sort of idealist in an increasingly hopeless situation. He has little power here to make things right, but it is his home and he does what he can.
    • Marwynn, done with her questions, peremptorily exits as a glowing avatar of light.
  • Walking around after the church, a man recognizes Kib. It is Uldern, Kib's closest childhood friend. They are both gladdened by each others' continued survival
  • He tells his story:
    • In Wydmoor after shit went down with the Absolds--he isn't connected by blood but was close enough to worry about it.
    • He was there for the sack, working with the Azure Geese, putting his skills as a smith and a warrior to good use
    • After the last rout, he made his way to the Bandit Kingdom
    • Here, he hopes to get in good with the Bog Wraiths.
  • The party discusses things through the rest of the day. They resolve to take up Levan on his offer, with conditions to help guide his rule into something more benevolent and less thuggish
    • They have no illusions that idealism will win any points with this, but Kib is convinced that he can appeal to Levan's pragmatism--a terrorized principality is much less efficiently ruled.
  • Night passes in these discussions. They approach Levan the next day

Resolve

  • Levan is notified of the party's decision. He seems extremely pleased (and impressed by Anise's persuasive power). The newfound alliance immediately sets to planning
