Variant: Flexible Weapon Focus with Bows

A fighter who takes Weapon Focus (longbow) or (shortbow) at 1st level might be very sad once he can afford a mighty composite longbow or shortbow and starts using it. Rather than making a player live with a feat that does not work with a mighty bow, the DM can let the player swap Weapon Focus with one kind of bow for Weapon Focus with another kind. These weapons are similar enough that a character could conceivably use what he knows with one weapon to use another better. For the sake of realism, the character can swap the Weapon Focus only when his base attack bonus increases. That way, the character’s capability with the first bow does not actually decrease. For example, an elven fighter starts with Weapon Focus (longbow) at 1st level. Before reaching 2nd level, he has upgraded to a mighty composite longbow, to which his Weapon Focus feat does not apply. On reaching 2nd level, with the DM’s permission, the player switches Weapon Focus to (composite longbow). The fighter’s attack bonus with the longbow stays the same. (He loses the +1 bonus from the Weapon Focus, but his increase in base attack bonus makes up for the loss.)
