Did germaine really make it through college? He seems like the sort that would run up a bunch of gambling debts or something then just run off. That was what happened to a lot of people at, say, Oxford during the middle ages.
:Gambling debts make the assumption that he'd lose. Germain seems like the kind of guy who'd kill at poker. -Slitherrr
:: He did manage to lose by theft probably his single most important possession to someone he never even remotely trusted. He's probably a great bluffer, but who knows what his betting strategy is like? I think he overthinks things and is really too cautious and risk-averse to really make a killing. I just can't imagine him going through multiple years of structured education at a medieval-type university, especially as he seems to chafe under authority. -gm
:: Also - are you making our next game?
::: I'm kind of under the impression that Germain was a criminal more as an act of rebellion than anything. That makes a lot of sense given how easily he has adapted to life as a crime fighter. He's also not been much of a risk-taker, and might not have been ever.
::: In any case, he is a very well-rounded sort of intelligent with great social skills, a natural investigator/researcher, and probably would have had an easy time with university. I imagine him finishing his classes without having to do much work, and having some time to be a degenerate on the side. Probably not top of his class or anything, but of the party he is the best or second-best in every intelligence-based skill. --Msallen
:::: Eh, that'd also explain the bardic lore stuff and even minor spellcasting that come with level(s) of bard.
: I do but it was exhausting to do so many is just a week! They were a great idea, though, and I feel like I made a lot more progress filling out the wiki than I do with my normal highly over-worked articles. Fresia and Flannery are works of art, sure, but to anyone actually using the wiki my 30 2 sentence entries were probably far more helpful. --Msallen
:: This exactly mimics my sentiments about the recent stubbins
::: I'm a fan, I'm much more comfortable stubbing things than fully fleshing other things out, just because the amount of history you guys have in this thing is a little intimidating. -Slitherrr

:::: Sure. I thinks stubs are more approachable and easier all around. To be fair, it's not like we have some crusty old codex we're slowly translating - as much as Matthew likes the Gnostics, he's not privy to any secret wisdom. Everything he made, other than the Sayid thing, he invented whole cloth or came out of a wall of text summoned by careless questioning. Feel free to embellish and invent: other than the Alexandria Narrative, most everything is hazy or unexplored, especially between, say, 300-1300 FI. Even by me. --absalom 13:51, 30 April 2010 (EDT)
::::::: For that matter, I think most of the stuff Matt did was atlas entries, which don't really intersect much with the religion stuff. Speaking of, we should finish the atlas. :) --absalom 16:43, 30 April 2010 (EDT)

This is a good start. I'm going to swoop in later with some clarifications, revisions, and additions but this is off to a good start. -gm

Any text vomit you want to produce before I go off and do some universities?
: Yeah, check in with me first with something like this before you go off. I think on the HU talk page I put some good starting references for trying to coordinate a University's history with the that of the wider realm. This is good, and Ubrekt is one of the more well conceived universities of mine. Might be a productive summer for us all at this rate! -gm

: General vomit.
: Founded in the 1st century BI, as a rival to the success of the rival University of Hakan. Modeled on the the classical Academy Ubrekti, it became a center of antiquities scholarship and historical sagecraft, especially interested in prerving and expanding known lore about the ancient Ubrekti and the First Empire.

University of Hakan seems to have some meat to it too, but this one is Germain's alma mater. Here are my thoughts on this one:
* Urban campus -- Occupies a number of prominent buildings through the city's civic and mercantile districts
: Sounds about right.

* Law + Accounting -- Being the center of the empire, this university needed to produce a large number of secretaries to govern and manage its massive territory. Ubrekt City has also always been a trade hub because of its prime waterways, and many nobles need their children to be able to keep documents and books.
: Well, this university was founded about 100 years before Alexandria's shit went down, so it's not exactly a direct line to the ancients. (See List of Universities) However, it was founded with the assistance of the clerics of the Lady of Peace, and so could have a strong civic and legal background for that reason. (The role of Ubrekt during the demi-pantheon was to act as a sort of elysium, where the various ever-feuding states could settle grievances, sign treaties, etc. When this university was founded, Ubrekt was headed up by a theocratic high-cleric with a secular landed senate. One of those things got replaced by a king when the ethnic Hakani were migrated there and the other still exists and really HAS since ancient times.
:: Sounds like it was still basically a legal center with a good reason to keep huge libraries of law texts and documents. Am I right about there being a mercantile focus, or would that sort of thing be outside the scope of the university?
::: That feels about right. While Antioch's Hakan university was almost entirely an arcane college, the Ubrekt university was much more bardic and professional in scope - law, history, oratory and rhetoric. All the "classical" values of Rome.. er. Ubrekti Empire. To this day, it probably boasts the world's most intact and comprehensive library.

* Philosophy + Classic Arts -- This area would have been considered the center of the world for a long time, and holds a large number of masterpiece statues, buildings, and murals. They also hold many of the classic studies on human form, architecture, religion, and culture. Because they have such a massive reserve of study materials (libraries, collections, etc) and experts, they can provide an education that few cities could top.
: It is as you say. In the late-demipantheon period, a renewed interest in the classics - spurred on by Antioch's - would naturally lead the Ubrekti university to focus on its own very storied culture. (Uh oh.. We can't avoid that Ubrekt article much longer.)

* BI? -- This is a pre-Alexandrian University, and I would expect them to have a relationship with the Church based on that experience. What was it like? Did the city/university side with Alex early, or did she fight them in the prophet's war? Not sure what to do here, but it seems big.
: Ubrekt would have been vehemently opposed to Alexandria, doubly so upon her return when it became clear she was intent on upending the demi-pantheon itself. With their expiration, the Theocrat-in-Chief and the old religious bureaucracy fell apart and the place was essentially reorganized Potsdam style by Alexandria, migrating the human Hakani from the lands that were to be re-bequeathed to the gnomes, and relocating them in Ubrekt. This has not been the most stable scenario from a long term PoV, but Alexandria didn't really have that luxury at the time. Cut her some slack.

* Church? -- I would imagine them having rich pre-Alexandria traditions. Also, they were not the center of the empire by Alex's day, so there was less need to coopt as a religious city. How did this place fare with the Church in the end? Is there that much of a presence? Whats it like?
: I might have answered this above? Are there aspects of it I did not or you would like more about?
:: Mostly. I guess from a more practical perspective: since the university was not founded by the modern church and opposed the modern church, how much of a culture does it have for training clerics? I see many of these universities (probably especially flannary, but also most of the western universities at least) being mostly clerical training even today, but this one seems like it might be an exception to that rule.
::: Well, we can assume that the Church tacked on a clerical training college to the main university sometime in the early FIs, but I'd agree that - of all the mainland churches - this is by far the most secular and clerical training is more of an afterthought than a true mission. How's that? -gm

::: I don't know if its too late for this, but I could also see this in its original, unedited form ported over to a local Fresian noble family. Matt, what were your thoughts on this? Helen/Mattie, do you really want this group to be set in the Ulan? Just thinking out loud here...
::: I could imagine this border being politically unstable--as much a moving set of alliance than a border. With some constant changing over time due to war, marriage, alliance, etc, that could even rationalize this as fairly recent history, with possibly no change to the timeline. If there was a reasonable land claim associated with it, I could see the Fresian "princes" rationalizing noble titles and political credibility for particualry organized barbarian tribes. --146.127.253.14
Reworking Tamerlane
Excerpts from intertwined discussion below:
<div style="padding:8px;background:#EEEEEE;">
: On the plus side, there is no stopping Fresian/Ulani barbarians from having accepted a more mainland Alexandrianism and becoming one of the many tribal princes that make up fresia today. Can we just cut and paste this into the story of the Tetalar family that rulse southeastern Fresia, or some more minor Fresian clan? Might have to shift the timeline back a bit, but it seems like a totally valid history for that area. Also, might put in a hook for some sort of vaguely Zuppanistic Alexandrian sect--if any country has it, Fresia seems like the best fit. --Msallen
:: I don't disagree - there are plenty of valid ways to integrate stories into the main narrative. [-detarame]
::Back to the topic, though - I was, In fact, thinking along these same lines when I was considering this last night as I was trying to go to sleep, there's a great chance that a LOT of the people of Fresia are descendants of tribes that migrated out of the Ulan after Alexandria's Crusade to exploit the major population declines caused by the same. [-detarame]</div>

Helen and I, after discussing this a bit last night, were also thinking along the lines of trying to work this into southern or southeastern Fresia. I was also talking to Matt that it could even have evolved into a small duchy in the area, with their own history keeping the area tight-nit. Helen did do a lot of cross-referencing and research to try to make this viable-- she didn't realize that the Ulan is still savage and shamanistic (as far as anyone knows). She was thinking "Barbarian" in the D&D sense was just a form of fighting-style. I'll let her clarify, but I think she saw it more like how we call Greek groups "tribes" (e.g. Mycenaean, Dorians, Spartans, etc). Low-tech but organized and upwardly moving peoples, whereas the Ulan tribes (as I see it) are typically disorganized aboriginal and primitive peoples often eaten by werebears.
: Heh, i can see that. FWiW, in the context of their own times the Greeks were the most advanced people of their age, it's worth pointing out. The Spartans were brave, yada yada, but the reason Marathon and Thermopylae were overwhelming Greek victories is because the Greeks were armed and armored with bronze and iron, while the Persians were armored with wicker shields and wooden lamellar armor. I also think, FWiW, barbarian in the D&D sense is even *more* savage and uncultured. After all, illiteracy is a part of the Barbarian package. I mean, they're a lot more of the Noble Savage than they were in older editions, but being unrefined is still the heart of both the class and the concept.
: That being said, these guys would be awesome as sort of "civilized semi-barbarian." After all, the historical stereotype is that Barbarians are conquered by those they subjugate. IE: they generally take over some civilized area, but over the long term assimilate large parts of the culture they supposedly conquered. See also: China under the Mongols, India under Every Conqueror Ever, etc. And, as I said, in the aftermath of Alexandria's crusade, you have a pretty substantial Dark Age period - where the "civilized" population has been badly weakened, while the Ulan population is just as good as it ever was, since they took no part in the conflict.
: In the wake of the Crusades, the rebuilding of society happened kind of outward in - beginning in the coastal areas and slowly working its way inward over a century or two of heavy missionary activity and active consolidation. Having the far south, especially in the Fresia region, being the last ones to "civilize" makes a lot of sense. In fact, it makes a lot of sense that - during the crusades - a bunch of Ulan tribals might have migrated into the relatively lush and empty Fresia and, over a few generations, become yet another Fresian clan. Since the Fresians are already associated with barbarian roots, this fits like a snug peg. It also lets these guys have some pretty unique and oddball cultural relics of their own that make them unique and also give them good reason to have some loose but persistent ties - culturally and through intermarriage - with some tribes deeper in the Ulan. -gm

Anyway, my proposal to get this story into canon:
* Move it to southern/southeastern Fresia
* Make it a small duchy or half of another duchy
* Refactor the Religion section
* Refactor the Education section
* Inject a little more influence from Fresian civilization and government as some of the catalyst for uplifting them as governable (or tolerated) subgroup
* Adjust some timelines backwards to try to keep the story pre-1000 and more sensitive to the Fresian timeline (it was able to dodge some of that by being Ulan before)
:: Yeah, I like all of this and, in fact, moving it to fresia makes a lot of the changes not as important. It's absolutely fitting that a small but established dutchy or province would have a well developed system of laws and education. In fact, it can cut both ways - the assimilation of large Barbarian exiles into the Fresian culture might very well have changed and influenced the development of Fresia moving forward. I could see that encouraging a more decentralized, clan based government as such currently exists. These guys probably would have adopted Alexandrianism, although "Alexandrianism" can look different in different places depending on the culture that's practicing it, so it's not necessarily a rigid form and could be slid in with only minor tweaking.
:: The big thing to remember when dealing with Pre-Alexandrian times is that there is very little information the further back one goes. Looking at the Ages of History, each of these epoch shifts occur after a great, cataclysmic whowhatzit. Usually it's a war. In fact, I think it's *always* been war. An each of those events leads to tremendous social upheaval, migrations, and loss of knowledge. So, almost nothing beyond myth and legend remain from the Primal Age, Time of the Eight, & First War while some fragmentary and dubiously trustworthy histories exist chronicling the Age of the Demigods - histories that become more detailed and accurate the closer they get to the next Epoch Marker -the Crusade. Post crusade, after the establishment of the church in the first few centuries of the Alexandrian Age, the records become much more complete and detailed.
:: Hmmm.. I wonder what the next Epoch Marker will bring. -gm

What else would you see as needing rework? Anything else not fit so well or need to be added to help make it work? -Mattie
: As I said, there's nothing really that prevents the Tamerlane from existing as part of the Mainland almost unchanged, but there's a lot that prevents them from being part of the Ulan tribes as they exist "today." The Tamerlane as a subculture is pretty great. -gm

Discussion and Guidelines for Major Content
At this point, I can't possibly clean this up to my satisfaction. I love the energy and the zeal and the detail, and I really hate to say anything because of the obvious work you've put in, but what you have created here is a city and it belongs in Fresia. I've held off and kind of tweaked here and there, especially because I don't know if these guys are critical to his plot or just a vanity project. But, I think that you let your heart and imagination run wild - which is awesome, btw - but I think you're thinking in the context of whatever you personally think is novel and interesting and not thinking about these guys in the context of a large, interconnected, and unified world, because it doesn't seem like you're giving a fiddler's whit to thoughts of setting or context. Having a barbarian tribe with a complex written constitution, five centuries of hereditary rule, a codified education system, a fully literate populace, and all the trappings of civilization flies in the very face of what it means to be a barbarian, and basically ignores the very role barbarian tribes are supposed to play. I think this whole article is very well written and organized, but there's no reason this wouldn't fit as a town somewhere, and every reason it doesn't fit as a barbarian tribe. And, it's not that I don't think these guys couldn't be revised into a state of suitable barbarism, but let's face it - and I'm not saying all barbarians need to be savages - there isn't the least bit barbarian about these guys. I mean, it's great content, but a lot of it is wildly incongruous with what the Ulan is supposed to represent. absalom 20:49, 5 May 2011 (EDT)
The best way to do that moving forward with future content? Actually consult and collaborate with the World Master in the future before creating an ancient and sophisticated civilization with 5,000 years of significant and detailed history. Even *you* do me that favor, Matt, and you are (by orders of magnitude) the most dickheaded player we have (because I'm not officially a player until Mattie's game launches. Then we can quibble "<strike>biggest</strike> Most"!). I mean, how many hours of discussion and how many pages of emails were passed back and forth between us before you created even minor content?
::Back to the topic, though - I was, In fact, thinking along these same lines when I was considering this last night as I was trying to go to sleep, there's a great chance that a LOT of the people of Fresia are descendants of tribes that migrated out of the Ulan after Alexandria's Crusade to exploit the major population declines caused by the same.
:: But, the fact remains, it's much easier to discuss things up front and collaborate then have to go back and do hours of clean up and revision work, and it doesn't cause me near the anxiety worrying about hurting feelings or tearing apart someone else's hard work.
::I mean, it's only recently that players have been willing enough - and comfortable enough with the setting - to generate their own content. Since this is the goal I always wanted to reach, I'm happy for that, and at the end of the day I'll readily take the blame for not having stricter and more formalized creation guidelines in place for the eventuality. But, suffice it to say, any *significant* content creation needs to be discussed with me in advance, which I thought went without saying. Not only so I can keep continuity creep from destroying the fabric of the world (see also: Dragonlace), but also so I can find a natural and organic place for whimsy strikes the player. Another, even more relevant, reason is because I have a broad and deep knowledge of the entire world that nobody else yet comes close to sharing. Not just from the PoV of spoilers and stuff - although there is that - but also simply keeping track of and remembering the hundreds of content-related side discussions, chats, and emails that could help illuminate and integrate and flesh out ideas players would like to see introduced into the world. absalom 09:55, 6 May 2011 (EDT)
::: There is a discussion of the politics of managing and encouraging volunteers to be had, but I'll give you a call and we'll have it off line. On the subject of dicks, however, I'm afraid it is a foregone conclusion: you always win by a marigin that is both wide and long ;) --Msallen
:::: Oh, absolutely! I'll readily admit that, when it comes to project management, my toolbox doesn't even have fisher price gear in it. I think I do better with the other team (Slitherrr, et al) because when we talk about game content, there's not two decades of interpersonal history there and it can be all business. Also, from a personal mentality point of view, going back and revising tons of work I've never seen is stressful and anxiety inducing in a way that discussing in advance is not, because I don't like feeling like I'm cutting apart someone's hard work. I'd much rather guide and influence their work from the get go rather than go back and slice and dice hours of their hard work. -gm
:::: Besides, its not how BIG of a dick you are, but how effective you are. So, I might have tons of natural talent, but you've really refined what little prickishness you were blessed with into masterwork status.
::::: I overcompensate well! I'm sure it doesn't help that I've gone and got you accoustomed to being badgered and berratted over these issues, but I'm unrepentent of the suffering I cause you or others. But yeah, its best to talk shit out rather than have to change it after its written. --Msallen

FWiW, since I'm working under the assumption most the people on the early list are made up, why have gaps in the lineage? Oral history isn't reliable or authentic, and we can safely assume for an oral history stretching back 5,000 years (longer than all of REAL recorded history, it's worth pointing out), everything before the advent of writing is essentially fairy stories and why wouldn't later storytellers just elongate the reigns of already made up figures, or just invent new figures to add in with the already invented ones? -gm

Why would they have a motto? They can't even read. The whole POINT of being a barbarian is that you get to not worry about all that sissy heraldric bull-pucky those effeminate northmen concern themselves with. ;)

Heh, these guys are like only semi-barbarians at this point, threw in some flavor in the introduction to highlight how I suspect the more "traditional" barbarian tribes would view these guys. -gm

Also: the barbarians of the Ulan have a universal, symbolic written language created by Mikos Lygit, FWIW, even if only priests and higher-up mucky-mucks know it. -gm

Yup, I'm getting to that (the symbolic Mikos language). And they have a verbal history which is where the motto comes from. - Helen
: Excellent. It's a pretty obscurely referenced tidbit, so I didn't know if you noticed it or not. absalom 15:55, 5 May 2011 (EDT)
Redacted History
These are the parts taken out from the history after 1000 FI:

As of 1401 FI, the current Chief of the Tamerlane is Bullstrode the Uniting.

The current Reis, Bullstrode the Uniting, assumed the Chiefdom in 1382 FI from his parents, Sumer the Stalwart and Odenia the Mindful, who are now both retired and elders. Bullstrode has recently become engaged to Dimendia Si'Lathe, the daughter of a blacksmith in Arabelle (and 15 years his junior).

The Old Code received major revisions in 772, and minor revisions in 1051 and in 1349 by Sumer the Stalwart.

The last chief and father of the current chief, Sumer the Stalwart, had his wife rule alongside him as Ekiz Reis or co-Chief.

Old Code Revisions:

* (1349 revision) A Reis or the advisers of the Reis may also appoint an Ekiz Reis to assume the roles of the Reis equally.

* (1349 revision) If there is an Ekiz Reis, the Ekiz Reis must approve entirely of the changes before the changes are presented to the Council of Elders.

* (1349 revision) and Ekiz Reis equally if one is appointed.
Members of the Council are bound to serve and protect the Reis (1349 revision) and Ekiz Reis if one is present (1051 revision) as well as uphold the culture, people, and traditions of the Tamerlane.

Lineage:

Dre the Solemn (992 FI - 1061 FI)

Connal the Completing (1011 FI - 1058 FI)

Sumer the Stalwart (1330 FI) & Odenia the Mindful (1336 FI)
Bullstrode the Uniting (1362 FI)

I modified the revisions to the Old Code and the like so I could keep some of the history while staying within the timeline.

The Odessan Invasion is a series of events leading up to an Odessan attack on Wydmoor Free City in 1401 Heavenfall. It covers a wide range of events with speculative ties to the takeover of Iros Forge and assassinations in Wydmoor, starting with the unseasonably warm weather and flooding of 1400 Wintercusp/Whitefall.

Significant Events
Late 1400: Unseasonable weather in Wydmoor region
* 1400 Harvest(?)-Wintercusp: unseasonably cold icy rains
** Centered on Iros Forge
** Buildup of snow and ice significantly disrupted travel in region
** Mose detected that the ice and snow were 'somewhat evil'
* 1400 Wintercusp-Whitefall: Weather turns unseasonably warm
** Buildup of ice/snow leads to immediate flooding
** Severs ties to Iros Forge completely, washing out roads and bridges
* Warmth ends in Whitefall, and temperatures immediately plummets
** Road to Iros Forge remains impassible due to road damage and cold/snow
** Occurs immediately after the party clears the Tomb of the Barbarian King
** Seemingly no correlation between barbarian mummy and rain
* Significance + speculation
** Iros forge is a significant source of Wydmoor's economic strength and military equipment
** As a naval power, Odessans have strong weather mages
** Cold would have stifled Iros Forge natural resources (food, etc)
** Following rains would have cut them off from support from the City, and allowed a takeover to operate in secret

Late 1400: Political instability in Wydmoor Free City
* Edrell's ascension to Captain of the guard
** Apparently outsider in Wydmoor
** Disrupts a figure loyal to the Mayor
** Election supported by poor and funded by Thieves' Guild
* Tensions regarding tax collection
** City guard, particularly under the jurisdiction of Fenn Lynrick in the merchant ward, are not adequately collecting Mayor's taxes
** Mayor's men disguise themselves as guards and "collect taxes"
** Frequent conflicts between city guards and mayor's men
* Murder of mayor's men
** Germain and some guardsmen ambush and subdue Mayor's men
** Mayor's men turn up dead the next day--Germain didn't kill them! Swear to Alexandria!
** Men suggested that the Mayor's wrath would be "severe" since Germain stopped them
* Significance + speculation
** Events were a considerable disruption in Wydmoor defensive structures
** Much easier to launch an offensive on Wydmoor in its current state
** Thieves received some extra leeway from Edrell after election
** Thieves also stood to gain from conflict between guard and mayor--did they antagonize it?

Whitefall 1400: Wydmoor fire
* Fire in the Wydmoor slums
** Arson sparked a fire that destroyed most of the eastern part of the city--namely slums
** The cities poor, who were the support base of the current captain of the guard, were largely ejected from the city
** Led to seizure of slum land by the mayor and the suspension of many economic laws
* Diaspora of Wydmoor's poor
** Mayor refuses to waive entrance tax, keeping the poor outside the city
** Areas around Wydmoor full of refugee camps
** Harsh winter leads to heavy casualties
* Significance + speculation
** Considerable political incentive for the Mayor to cause this fire
** However, also incentive for the invaders to start it and confuse blame
** Destabilized the cities main internal defenders--the city guard
** Refugees could be a considerable complication defending the city, and may even be a source of discontents that could join or aid the Odessans

Date Unknown: Capture of Iros Forge
* Iros Forge, west of Wydmoor, is captured by a presumably Odessan force
** The roads were unavailable for some time, so no one noticed when it happened
** We found the place badly damaged but apparently operational, holding a large army flying odessan banners
* Significance and speculation
** When the bad whether cleared, emissaries from the forge arrived for the mayor. It should have already fallen by this point. Why?
** Iros Forge is a significant source of income for major Wydmoor figures
** It is also a source of powerful Red Iron, a high grade military metal

Heavenfall 1401: Wydmoor assassinations
* While the party was investigating Iros forge, there was a coordinated wave of assassinations in Wydmoor
** Successful assassinations of the Bank treasurer and many City Councilmen
** Survivors: Edrell, Dandrell, Theodora, Calvis Wydsomme
** Bog Wraiths not targeted
* Took out much of the city's elite
** Again, considerably weakens Wydmoor's internal structure
** Appears to have been executed by the same hobgoblin/odessan perpetrators of the Iros Forge takeover
* Speculation + Significance
** Clearly part of the invasion
** City council seems to have been the most vulnerable--is it significant that the mayor survived?
** Requires a lot of expert knowledge of Wydmoor--did it have inside help?

People and Organizations of Interest
Odessa
* Mixed force flying Odessan banners that has taken over Iros Forge and is marching on Wydmoor
** Considerable number of Hobgoblins in the force--Hobgobland is on the Odessan/Wydmoor border
** May have also seen a character of Elvish decent--elves and Odessans have a relatively close relationship
** Not entirely sure how the force is affiliated with Odessa
** Why are they working with Hobgoblins?
* Inside support from Wydmoor
** Some actions, especially the assassinations, would probably require insider knowledge
** Significant disorder in Wydmoor leading to attack could be a coincidence, but it probably isn't
** Multiple suspect groups/people could be aiding them, and are discussed below
* Iros Forge takeover
** Almost certainly aided by unusual weather patterns--probably by weather mages
** After the rain, some people left iros forge to report to wydmoor--mayor's men + others?
** These people must have been Odessan agents?
* Assassinations in Wydmoor
** Carried out in part by hobgoblins--how did they get into the city?

Calvis Wydsomme
* We originally attributed most of the Wydmoor problems to him
** Mayor's men seemed more afraid of their boss than Germain when he subdued them
** Slum fire served his political agenda in his confrontation with Sheriff Edrell
* Some reason to suspect involvement with Odessans
** Fire also weakened the cities defenses
** With many of the city council removed, he may be able to put more in office
** His agents from Iros Forge must have come after the Odessan occupation
* Dead, and probably not the mole given how scared he was when he was killed

Edrell Odenthorpe
* Source of a significant amount of political instability in the city
** His arrival stirred up conflict between the Mayor and the guard
** Allied with the Thieves' Guild to secure his own power, although it seems this relationship has soured
* Has certainly grown considerably in power and authority as a result of the assassinations
* Personal reasons to suspect that he did not plan this course of events
** Sad, drunken nadir in Germain's apartment
** Crusade against the guild, which resulted in decent lost holdings for the guild, indicates that their relationship is over for reals

Wydmoor Thieves' Guild
Naprid
Wydmoor Bank
* Major player in the city, but one we know little to nothing about
* Little is known about the impact of this attack on them
** Bank treasurer was killed in the assassinations
* Have lent a considerable amount of money to the Odessan King!

Other than that, a splash of social skills to cover his politicking.
Did you get all of your XP this game, or did you leave before the Quest Chain XP was given? Anyway, when this guy levels - professional or wizard? -gm
: I don't remember... I keep detailed xp numbers at arms length anyways ;) He should be my level - 2 and you should impose some sort of penalty or quest on me if he starts crafting. I'll have to ponder over the class. On one hand, I think he earned some time working the street and dealing with powerful people, so a level with mad skills would be good. On the other, there are some hot 4th level spells that could make me a much bigger thorn in the guild's side, which I think will be a bigger deal soon. --74.68.100.149
: By the way, I like that the focus on abjuration and divination. That the sort of stuff I wanted from a wizard. The fact that I have nondetecetion at my disposal makes that whole discussion about the amulet a lot less important. It's not as good for political reasons, but its still pretty sweet. Also, I'd like to put clairvoyance on the wish list for spells. If I find a way to learn an area well enough, or get Egg to learn it, then I can spy on the guild and prisoners and such quite well. --74.68.100.149
:: Well, I've got a plan for him if he starts crafting that may, in the long term. Basically, just keep track of his experience spent on crafting and I'll take care of the rest. -gm
:: Considering what he's been doing for the past three weeks, if he's getting a level it's going to be in Professional. From here on out, though, it'll probably be Wizzy since he's going to be doing a lot more research and mage stuff and a lot less setting up of a business. -gm
::: Yeah, looking at the untapped potential from level 1-3 and what I gain from level 4 spells, I think I like taking professional now. Give him some ranks in diplomacy please! I'll have to have a little chat with him about being so frank around the other PCs--I think its best that he and I sugar-coat ideas before we present them to any of the damn hippies in the party. His totally reasonable comment about selling food caused all sorts of silly moral issues for the party! --Msallen
:::: For the record, Mose wouldn't have any qualms with you guys selling the rarer/luxury foodstuffs to the upper class at a premium. Seems like there would be more money to be made in hard-to-get stuffs for the rich than overcharging the penniless. -Mattie
::::: I'm sure that's what he was suggesting and Al just took it out of context ;) --Msallen

Actually, there is a *lot* more to be had selling basic foodstuff than luxury items. Scarce items with low demand becoming more scarce is nothing compared to basic staples going from reasonably common to scarce. Fact is, prices are going to skyrocket with or without your help: Egg isn't creating the opportunity, just taking advantage of it. That's just the nature of the siege economy, and you can be sure that when the Thieves' Guild start shipping food in, it won't be to open a soup kitchen. -gm
: Well, you painted the grain supplies as in good shape so I assumed people in the town were good with basic foodstuffs, etc. Hence my thought that right now the townies would want to pay more for scarce luxury foods and wine versus the simpler stuff. Anyway, that's Mose's preference to try to make money off the rich rather than the poor, if possible. :) -Mattie
:: Given that the cities pop has reduced by half at least and the fact that the city didn't really make much of an effort getting grain to the refugees anyways, this is a good point. Seems like the grain reserves should be well stocked for some time. --Msallen
::: Unless it's been sitting long enough that spoilage is a factor. If this world had an equivalent to John Adams, I'd say the sensible thing would be to charge for the food so a few people don't take all of it and hoard it to resell at a much higher price than even you guys would charge, but I doubt Mose or anyone else has had a grounding in Economics (Germain might, except that the discipline as we know it probably doesn't exist on the Mainland, except in a very primitive form). -Slitherrr
:::: All that is true, there is a grain ration being doled to citizens. In the camps, however, (or what is left of them) prices for even common food is huge, not that anyone has any money to spend on them anyway. Non-grain staples - food, butter, booze - are going to be expensive even inside the city, although the reopened smuggling corridors and drastically reduced population help with that some. -gm
* [Fixed, with Gusto] Characters start with Ubrekti + Regional languages, so Egg is either missing a language or a skill point
:: I think I originally had Ubrekti as his birth language, before it was discovered that he was of hakani descent.

Fitting In
We'll have to see how we want to play it. I had a similar discussion with Slitherrr about *****************, his coming cohort. Basically, do you want to play and manage every part of the guy, have me run the guys personality but control him in combat, or have me control everything with you giving general commands?

Likewise, advancement - you or me? I would think he obviously sticks to Wizard, though depending on what kind of work you have him doing early on it might make sense RP wise to take a second level in professional, as well as just being a good add. Prof 2/Wizard X gets a +1 AC bonus and a net of +4 skill points, over Prof 1/Wizard X, I believe? Prof 4/Wizard X is a much more substantial investment in the nonmagical side of thing, which is costing probably two spell levels for +2 AC bonus, a net of +12 skill points and Uncanny Dodge.

: Really up to you. I'm sure you don't want to play another character, so I'll make the decisions for him in game time. He's pretty much a squishy buffer in MMO terms, so in general I expect he'll stick close to LE and cast buffs. As for advancement, I'd say straight wizard unless there is a really compelling reason to go prof 2. Multiclassing casters is a lot harsher than martial characters except for a splash. Also, he'll have plenty of skill points, and Germ is happy to have a knowledge guy around, which wizards do fine at.
: Germ in general would prefer a cohort that pushes back and has his own opinions--he's not looking for a yes-man, he's looking for another set of eyes and a sharp mind to bounce ideas off of. So in general I'll make the decisions to lighten your load, and you veto anything you don't like. --Msallen

: A pretty awesome .pdf that .... some guys? .... put together. It's a LOT of crazy rule shit only good for the simulationist, but the chapters on economy and other races are phenomenal. Came out from the MeFi post about Lore's comic. (Which needs to start updating again.) -gm
: By which I mean major sections of this are going to become canon over the Christmas holidays. Starting with languages.
:: Holy fuck, the bit about the Aboleth in the "Empirinomicon" section is AWESOME. -Slitherrr
::: After reading it, and then reading our own language section, our treatment is pretty close to the one in the TOME OF NECROMANCY, etc. etc. that you linked. We gloss over the Servitor languages, but we've also sufficiently hand-waved that into a question of cultural ignorance rather than canonical laziness. The only major changes I saw fit to add were to add regional qualifiers to some of Kib's languages (there are probably also other characters who need audits, notably Germain), and some more explanatory text on the Languages and List of Languages pages. -Slitherrr
:::: Well, not a full on rules change, but more of a codification of flavor, but not going all the way into the million dialects flavor. The more I think about it, though, the less attractive it comes. I think we're in a pretty good place, happy medium wise. The Aboleth, yes, has become one of my favorite creatures literally overnight. Anyway, with the languages, I guess I liked the Pidgin and Creole discussions enough to want to incorporate them. In face, a lot of the langauges (the ones that end in -i, coincidentally, including Ubrekti itself) are Creoles that developed from regional dialects and Old Ubrekti. The ones with -n endings (Petaran, Odessan, Petaran) are from ethic groups powerful enough to have retained their own language (like, say, Greek.) I like what you've added, having just read it, and think we're on the same page.In fact, you've done a better job that I was even imagining - i actually wrote that bit about Pigin and Creole BEFORE I read your edit. (I'm reading them all and doing one big edit to not accidentally erase half of the talk page, like I have a .... history of.) Halfling, of course, just learned Ubrekti in the same way that, say, the Etruscans eventually just abandoned their native tongue for Latin. -gm
:::: One Eratta: As to the Lizard Men... If anyone cared enough to actually pay any attention to them, I think they'd find that Ssel'it has amazingly little variance to none at all. I wrote a little sentence as a hint that I had to strike for being too spoilerly, but suffice it to say there is a reason for the uniformity and it makes sense. Hint: Lizardman Racial Class is Druid. Hmmmmmmm.
:::: Also down with renaming. I've actually gotten into the spoke habit of referring to the language and the people of the dwarves as Gilden. Because, I mean, Gilden Home. It's not rocket science. Gnomish, OTOH, I hadn't really thought about in those terms. Hmmmm. -gm
::::: Reading a few more changes it, I see we are once again on the same page. Time for me to Secret Page this bitch. (Another trick I learned from this book!) -gm
::::: Read Econimocon from the beginning - I backed into the last half last night. It's worth noting, if only for backpatting purposes, that I preempted some of these concerns. Monetary policy was one of my thoughts putting this campaign together - banks and states (with large bank accounts) have been major actors from the beginning. I'm not done yet, but I think there's a place in his discussion for the idea of patronage. Essentially spreading out money as a sort of personalized social service program has been effective from Roman Patricians to modern Hamas. But, yeah, it is kind of sad how tiny dragon hordes have to be by the mechanics. Since there are really no Wyrm-tiered dragons in this game, and usually believe in a 1 or 2 dragons per campaign ever rule, I usually go with the You Are Fucking Rich option. My thoughts at the time, since we never got to the Alexandria endgame, was that by the time the party got around to taking out the last dragons, they'd be to the point that these coins were basically social currency and probably funded a pretty substantial portion of the campaign in her absence. Of course, I also just don't think some dragons horde. Black Dragons, for example, or really anyone who doesn't live in a cave. -gm
:::::: Econimicon was the first I read after Lexicomicon, and yes, it's extremely enlightening. The fact that we're sitting on a mere 100 gp in COPPER and finding it hard to carry definitely contributes a lot of insight. -Slitherrr

Also - it's a shame Daniel hates retconning so much. Those artisan rules would be right up his alley. -gm

I have to say, I really like the stuff in the Economicon. I'm going to even put in some possible changes in a section on Kib's character sheet in case you end up integrating all/most of it. -Slitherrr
: I really LOVE all the -micon section. Whoever the hell these two are, have put a lot of really awesome though into HOW a truly fantastical, hero-based setting would operate and the long term ramification of some of the weirdo stuff tossed into D&D. (Like the Aboleth ability, or the Sahuagin) There is one part, somewhere, where the point is made that the analogue for D&D isn't the "middle ages" at all. Small patches of civilization surrounded by frightening wilderness? Small bands of heroes toppling empires? That's not Chaucer, that's fucking HOMER. D&D is an iron age mindset in medieval clothing. I read that part and was like "Holy shit, that's what *I've* always thought. These guys get it*. And then I looked up and it was bedtime and I'd read like half the document. If you haven't gotten to the part about aristocrats and heroes, I laughed out loud through it. Amazing work. -gm
:: Quite. -Slitherrr
::: The tone of loving mockery makes it very readable. It's like Aristotle and Lao-Tzu got together and answered every D&D argument that ever arose over mountain dew, pizza, hootch, and/or weed. <i>There you go! Now that we’re all on the same page(page XX)</i>-gm

The NPC class section is, in a word, genius. -Slitherrr

The host for this document is a computer science department at Bard, which is sort of a pretentious, expensive college focusing in the fine arts. Maybe the authors must represent some sort of bizarre intersection of engineering obsessiveness and artist creativity. And at least one of them knows the LaTeX typesetting language. :: Maybe your group just needs a strong father figure to sort itself out. -Slitherrr
::: Yeah, they're more like Party of Five. -gm
::: We already have 2 or 3... I can't imagine more would help. After 10-15 years playing together, we've learned that the dysFUNctional party is the most fun! --Msallen
:::: For certain values of "fun." You'll take the MeFighter's out of my cold, dead hands! Or, to be fair, out of their own dead hands, since they're Risk Analysis Metrics are all fucked up. -gm
::::: Dude, how did you just kill your OWN edit? -Slitherrr
::::: Also, our risk analysis isn't so bad. The poor guardsdwarves who attacked Swingin' Dan and the Professor probably don't think so, I suppose, but we still handled that fight pretty well despite that. -Slitherrr
:::::: How many times has Thed or Thoven have wandered off alone and only survived due to a single lucky die roll. -gm
::::::: Yeeeah, they kind of have that habit. -Slitherrr
:::::::: And there was maybe that time the ranger decided to go bow to bow with the +2 ranger... thankfully I was in a tree and it was a two-weapon ranger else I might not have had that 1 hp that I met the group with. :-P -Feantari
::::::::: Well, FWIW, unless you got killed falling out of the tree, you probably would not have been killed and just would have met the party a different way. ;) -gm
While many Alexandrian bards fill the typical social and political role normally attributed to the class, bards here have another specific role. Alexandrian clerics must abide by a special restriction--the XXXX--that prevents them in participating in wars between goodly races. As a result, clerics are severely restricted in serving in military conflicts between nations. Since Druids are a rarity indeed, this leaves Bards as the only viable option for magical healing on the battlefield. As a result, Bards are a common part of any military or mercenary organizations, and many members of this class find wealth, fame, and experience in such outfits.
