The great, winged black beast wakened by Arak in the late summer of 35 BI. By winter of that year, Alexandria and several who would become the First Stand - Steros Merroand, Sayid ibn Maimun, Marrwyn Teldandilion, and Kivan Elyryn, as well as Dadtim the Elder - set out to rescue the Children of Tragedy from sacrifice. They fought and, thinking they were battling the Black Wyrm itself, slew instead its recent spawn. The group, as well as the Children of Tragedy, were able to hide in the forest, but the monster exacted retribution by razing the village of Tragidore, setting fire to the surrounding countryside, and slaughtering the population of the village. It then made a new lair in the far northern swamps, where it would terrorize the city states of the Polis League for years, until being put down by Alexandria in 19 BI.

Some have argued that the Black Wyrm could have easily found the group, or even razed the swamps it knew them to be hiding in, and instead purposefully chose to keep them alive to suffer the loss of the village.

The Wandering Brothers, or travelers, is one of the earliest Holy Militants, established by Arch-Warden Hedran Riqtelo in 125 FI. The Wandering Brothers dedicate their lives to the maintaining the roadways and protecting the pilgrims of the mainland. Founded in 104 FI by Grannet Adlethor, who is considered their Champion, as well as the Champion of Pilgrims and Stonemasons.

Founding of the Order

According to lore, Adlethor was a stonemason by trade, one of the hundreds of Dwarven wage laborers contracted by Hadrian Teldandilion to construct the Sacellum Chancel. Several years into the project, the supply of ore and stone being imported from Gildenhome became interrupted by bandits. The losses were small at first, but within a year came to be great enough to paralyze the entire project. During one such stretch, on this 111th birthday, Adlethor was stricken with a vision. He rallied the Dwarven craftsmen and masons of Alexandria City (still largely depopulated and under construction) and led them against the bandits, during which time he was credited with a great many miracles and astounding feats. When the bandits were crushed, they found that - though the metal had long been sold - all of the stone remained. He returned to Alexandria City amid a great fete and much fanfare, and even granted audience with the Arch-Warden.

Adlethor told of his vision, and declared that the recovered stone belonged to Alexandria Herself, and with it She wanted him to build a great, stone road, with sturdy and regular guarhouses to protect commerce, as well as the tide of pilgrims that had already been arriving in a steady stream for some years. Soon, Hadrian was convinced of the wisdom of this decision and granted the request. Within two years, the project was complete, and the first engineered road since the time of the Ubrekti Empire was complete. He assigned Adlethor a contingent of Dwarven stonemasons to maintain and expand the road, to be funded by tolls.

Within three months, all but seven of Adlethor's workers left, angered and annoyed the high expectations of piousness and devotion he expected from his followers. However, as word spread of his devotion and miracle working, Dwarves began to flock to his banner. As he required a vow of poverty, money from tolls - as well as estates surrendered by those who joined - fueled continued building. In 125 FI, he petitioned Arch-Warden Hedran Riqtelo for permission to form a Holy Militant to maintain the road system and protect its travelers.

The Order Since

In the millennium that followed, the Travelers have grown into a wealthy, well known, and powerful Holy Militant. Some aspect of their road system exists in almost every nation, and the Traveler emblem (the eight spoked wheel) is respected and admired throughout the mainland. Most Brothers are Dwarves, although there are a substantial minority of halflings as well. As they spend their lives traveling, and escorting pilgrims, merchants, and travelers, most are affable and well versed in the cultural tableaux of the mainland.

Hourglass of Vigilance

Although the eight spoked wheel is the Brotherhood, they are also recognized by the symbol of the hourglass. No Brother may allow a full night's watch to pass asleep, and upon ordination, all are given a small mithril and crystal hourglass on an electrum chain, which is actually a minor magical item. When turned, the sand will run through the hourglass in exactly 4 hours, at which time, if the owner is asleep, he will be instantly awakened.

The hourglass only wakes up the owner, it does not grant any benefits of restfulness, and the owner is subject to all normal effects of extended sleeplessness when applicable. At fifth level, gains the ability - once per week - to use the hourglass to awake fully rested and refreshed after the four hours. The number of times per week this can be used increases by one every other level, until maxing out at once per night at level 15.

The group, as well as the Children of Tragedy, were able to hide in the forest, but the monster exacted retribution by razing the village of Tragidore, setting fire to the surrounding countryside, and slaughtering the population caught there to a man. If you would like access to edit the wiki, please let me know. It is actually open to all right now, I believe, with IP logging on.

Tools
* A custom campaign file for RedBlade character creator. Very possibly borked in many places, but includes (most?) changes to Gnome, languages, and a couple other random things.

* Client license for Fantasy Grounds 2

* For audio we use Teamspeak

You might want to follow some of the "getting started" links to the left.

Perhaps you should read about Alexandria Omnity, her worship, or browse an ever-growing timeline of major events.

The City of Wydmoor has been an autonomously governed city-state since it was occupied in 701 FI by Ubrekti heretics during the disunity of the Third Interregnum, who cleared much of the swamp and quickly picked up productive agriculture. When besieged by the forces of Odriss Rockheart several years later, the city was already able to hold out the six years it took Rockheart and the heretics to truce. The leader of the heretics renounced the heresy and accepted the Hadriarchy of Wydmoor Free City.

The city is governed by a mayor, who is elected by a yearly popular vote attended by those citizens who can afford the 1 SP required to vote. (The political system of the Free City is actually quite complex) The Hadriarch of Wydmoor is a powerful figure as well. The centuries long pilgrimage trade has financed the construction of a great cathedral and helps maintain the city's defense force, provided by the Bog Wraiths, a mercenary company that operates out of Castle Wydmoor. It also helps pay for the Town Magius, usually hired from one of the great Universities.
The walled section of the city is about 8 square miles, along with another several miles of tightly regulated urban space outside of Wydmoor Castle and the river harbor. Another 15 miles to the north and south of the city are dedicated to intensive agriculture, most of which is retained by the government for a harvest cycle (in reserve for seige) before being dispersed among the citizens and sold for profit.

Since the swamp effectively prevents access to Alexia, and the Bloodmane hills make travel to Odessa difficult, Wydmoor Free City is primarily influenced by Ubrekt to the south. While it's autonomy assures an unusually diverse population, Ubrekti is by far the most common heritage, and at least three quarters claim current or ancestral Ubrekti ties.

75.64.103.69:

Gnomes are clannish, insular people. Perhaps it was not always this way, but historical circumstance has thrust that role upon them, and a discussion of Gnomish life and culture cannot be discussed without a discussion of their history. To a Gnome, history is culture. Since being originally displaced and enslaved from Old Hakan during the days of the First Empire, Gnomes tended to be artisans and skilled workers. When they entered into the Gnomish Vassalage, they were freed but were instead force integrated into Dwarven society. In order to cling to their heritage, they became fastidious keepers of history and jealously guarded those innovations they brought with them from their days of technical servitude. The restoration of their homeland during Alexandria's Crusade infused them with a cultural pride, but has also galvanized them toward radicalism.

Theirs is by far the most technically advanced species and nation in the Known World, although - oddly enough - Gnomish Wizardry trends toward the spiritual rather than technical.

Gnomes live primarily in Gildenhome and Hakan.

---

Rule Information

Gnomes of this world are substantially different from the standard race described in the PHB. These are not badger chatting forest dwellers, or mound living illusionists. The loss of their homeland and experiences under the Gnomish Vassalage changed Gnomish culture in major ways. They are rough-and tumble, freedom loving race. An educated and largely urbanized people, they resisted Dwarven cultural influence under the Vassalage by clinging tightly to their own cultural and ethnic identity, pride that has transformed into a strong sense of nationalism with the restoration of their ancient homeland.

Gnome characters should refer to the following during creation:
+2 Int, -2 Str: Gnomes are physically small, and thus weaker on average than other humanoids. As their society values education, however, they tend to be quite bright. Even the dimmest Gnome can recite his family history at least back to the time of Alexandria from memory.

Small: As small size creatures, gnomes get +1 to AC, +1 to attack rolls, and +4 to hide check (all "size" bonuses). They must also, however, use smaller and less damaging weapons, as well as having 75% the carrying capacity of a medium size creature. This operates as stated in the PHB.

Weapon Familiarity: In translation, the motto of the Hakani Rapartos, the Gnomish national army, is "Only Once." Almost every gnome undergoes training with the Gnomish hook hammer, and so it is treated as a Martial Weapon rather than an Exotic weapon. This operates as stated in the PHB.

+2 saving throw vs. Illusion: Gnomes are often both cynical and perceptive, and are much more likely to see through illusions.

Gnomes have a generally high exposure level to magic, and most understand at least basic metaphysics. As such, all begin with 2 bonus ranks in Use Magic Device. This also allows them a bonus to their Use Magic Device rolls equal to their Intelligence modifier.

+1 racial bonus on attack rolls versus humans. Gnomes have a long tradition of animosity with humans, and have thousands of generations worth of dirty tricks against human foes. (This does not mean Gnomes have a racial hatred of humans, they just have a several thousand year history of conflict with them)

+4 AC bonus against "Giant" type monsters. This operates as stated in the PHB.

+2 racial bonus on Listen checks. This operates as stated in the PHB.

Low Light Vision. This operates as stated in the PHB.

Spell Like Abilities: Gnomes with at least a 10 CHR gain the following spell like ability 1/day: Detect Magic

Base land speed is 20 feet. This operates as stated in the PHB.

Gnomes may not learn the language of woodland creatures.

Favored Class: Rogue, Gnomes are a skillful race, and know how to fight dirty.
