== Wings Alternatives ==
I would love to personalize this by creating some sort of alt-ability that isn't fucking wings. -gm
: What about a DM-chosen elemental/outsider companion of 12 HD? (I.e. somewhat like the creatures from ''Planar Ally''.) For balance purposes, I think Druid animal companions are like 16-18 hit dice at this level, a Paladin mount would be ~12HD in this range, and a Leadership cohort could be level 16. -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]
:: That's a good idea. Another might be some sort of powerful and interesting aura. Like a permanent magic circle against chaos centered on the player or something. --[[User:Msallen|Msallen]]
::: I was going to propose the [http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/archon.htm Aura of Menace] that archons get, but it had wording in there about removing the effect if they were hit by an attack. While good, I figured this wouldn't be as universally handy as Wings might be. Still some sort of circle/aura thing is a good idea, too. -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]

My idea was a sort of slotted-permanency spell mechanic, where you could swap out X spell levels worth of eligible spells on yourself that have a permanent duration, during some ritual that is time consuming but XP free. Where X is, perhaps, your unmodified CHR modifier. -gm

Alt: <i>Deathless</i> : The sunrise/sunset (depending on alignment) after you are killed, you rise again as if by a <i>raise dead</i> spell, suffering all related losses. You still age normally, and will still die when your maximum age is reached.
: I have an issue with this one, but its... well... difficult to classify I guess. Player death generally only happens when a) the player is generally ok with it (ie. won't quit) and b) it seems like it will drive the story in a good way. At least with my experience in our games, players don't generally die in the middle of insignificant fights--they die in high risk situations where they can at least go out with some bang. If its a frivolous death, I suspect there are some fudged die rolls and second chances that usually prevent it. Not to say GM isn't mean and harsh--just that dieing because you failed a low DC save on a trap that was put in a hall to be a speedbump doesn't tell a good story, and that's really what its all about.
:: I have an issue with this line of thought and I don't agree with it and, if taken to the extreme, is going to end up getting someone killed. It's not *all* about the story, it's *all* about fun and the game. If *all* I cared about was the story, I'd go back to being a writer. I think this PoV ends up bringing with it essentially the same mindset as Freddie and Fannie - "Well, we've got an implicit guarantee of health, so lets undevalue risk!"
:: I think part of your feeling that was is because, frankly, we never get beyond 10th or 12th level very often in ANY of our games, which is right about the time THAT particular idea (death is rare and unlikely) goes out the window. LE is throwing PKs around like crazy, and soon you guys will start facing them on your own. By the time you hit level 18, things like Power Word Kill, Finger of Death, et al. are amazingly, amazingly prevalent.
:: Also, you'll notice I don't *believe* in "insignificant fights," in that every fight is potentially lethal. I don't subscribe to the WotC/D&D standard dungeon crawl model of fighting a bunch of weenies then going to rest.
:: At the end of the day, I don't believe that "it's all about the story" is a valid point of view, and I'm the storyteller. Like all collaborative activities, everyone defines "what it's about" a different way.
:: Also, as an aside, I think player death even in minor combats "moves the story forward" because the "story" is interactive and morphic and continues apace if no one dies or if everyone does. Also, the effect of a player death on the party automatically has storyline significance-gm
:: What this really tells me is that some people are expecting me to bail them out. If all we care about is interactive storytelling, let's break out the Once Upon a Time cards. -gm

: Given that, this ability has pretty limited value. Chances are good that all that will really happen is the player will not get the second chances that they would normally have got, and they will come back to life. It could be a cool story moment, but chances are good that it will not be. In which case, this ability should read: at some point in the future, you will die for some silly reason that you probably would't have died from if you didn't have this ability, and your resurrection will be somewhat more flavorful. It'll sort of end up like Anise's death, which was fine for a 1st level item power, but seems weak for a 17th level class ability. --[[User:Msallen|Msallen]]
:: As above. Flawed premises lead to highly flawed presumptions. You are cogs in the wheel, and while you are stars of your own stories, you are not the stars of THE story. You are characters like all the rest. Also, I don't care if people quit after they die, and I've never really cared if people got pissed at me. -gm

== Divine Casters of the world ==
So, Mainland has Clerics, and Petara has Favored Souls as befitting their more decentralized religion. Druids and rangers are the sole divine casters among the Sidhe, and never become favored souls, although both Druids and Favored Souls are rare but not unheard of among the Halflings. -gm

Discussed this a bit with GM. He mentioned that Alexandrian faithful are everyone who goes through the [[Eight Rites]]. This applies to pretty much everyone born in the Mainland. His words: "Are they following the church sacraments and going through the rites of passage? No smite."

In theory, though, this means you can smite animals, plants, elementals, aberrations, undead (?), or other things that don't have religion, right? You can't smite a Mainlander, but you can smite the horse they rode in on? (I'm intentionally being broad/silly here to help flesh out the clarification.) Or must they be intelligent things?

Yet, in my book, since they don't get a lot of smites (and get them only at 5th level+), pretty much any direction this goes is probably not going to wreck their balance. -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]

: A sensible restriction would be to have it only apply to humanoids. --[[User:Msallen|Msallen]]
::: Including humanoids with the undead template, I assume? What about aberrations? -[[User:Slitherrr|Slitherrr]]
:::: I would suppose that would include Humanoids, Monsterous Humanoids, but perhaps NOT undead because they're not int.
== Religious tolerance of Peteran Heresy? ==

How tolerant are Mainlanders day-to-day of Peteran Heresy religion? Are they generally accepting and on good terms (for day-to-day Mainlanders) or do they view them as blasphemers? Any real-world analogies? I can tell the churches themselves are opposed (i.e. "Peteran Heresy" name), but how does that translate into day-to-day relationships for (a) citizens of the countries and (b) members of the church? -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]
: Well, at the highest levels, there's kind of a policy of "Mutual Coexistance," as both Greater Alexandriandom and the Petaran's are both entrenched enough to prevent annihilation. Sure, the population, economy, and geographic size of the mainland is like 10x that of Petara, the mainland has a lot more infighting and cultural divisions that prevent working together.
: That said, if someone started preaching Petaranism, creating Favored Souls, etc. there would be a pretty quick and savage breakdown. Real-world analogies? I guess look anywhere that Greater Islam shared a border with Christendom and see what happened. -gm
:: What about day-to-day sorts of things? If a Peteran boy had no choice but to go to a Mainland school, would he (a) be forbidden, (b) allowed but ostracized by most students and teachers, (c) only be teased a lot by other kids (specifically for having a different religion), or (d) not really be noticed/teased more than any other transplant to a new school?
:: For my own sake, I'm trying to understand the average sentiment between Mainlanders and Peterans. Should Mose/Kimika (at least) have been distant/skeptical regarding Quinalin early on because of the church differences? Or is it a religious difference that doesn't affect day-to-day dispositions very much? (No rush on the answer, just curious.) -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]
::: I don't see any point in running down every extreme and virtually impossible hypothetical. What would happen to an Arab orphan in Paris? He'd go to a Christian orphanage, and from there, who knows? It's up to the kid, I guess. "Day to Day" interaction doesn't really exist on 90% of the mainland. FWIW, Quin is *not* a Petaran himself, he is Alexandrian by faith and Celstian by nationality, and his knowledge of their ways comes from the close relationships his father developed while trading. -gm
:::: Thanks for the clarification on Quin, that makes the point moot. I don't care about specific situations (beyond our own), but you responded initially about the high-level church's position and not the day-to-day as I had sought, so I provided an example to help get the gist of what I want to know. There's a big difference between "they are stoned on the street in most cities" and "they're welcomed and respected". The former is hinted with just the notion of calling it "Peteran Heresy" and having a Mainland with only one religion. Anyway, sorry-- just wanted some day-to-day sentiment clarification. If Quin isn't Peteran by religion then it's not very important unless we run into more of them. -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]
::::: We're not at stoning in the street levels, at the very least. Certainly, merchants like [[Kathkallan]] demonstrate that Petrans are tolerated in the mainland and allowed to travel, conduct businesses, and be treated with general respect. Using that as an example, the authorities are more likely to turn a blind eye to ripping off or discriminating against a Petran, but not to the point where outright aggression and abuse of the law is tolerated. It's probably also region-by-region, though, and a generally lawless and sacreligious community like Wydmoor might be more tolerant than, say, the more devout areas of rural flannary. --[[User:Msallen|Msallen]]
:::::: I think that's a pretty good takeaway, yeah. Again, a Petaran merchant isn't going to be too hassled, but you're only going to find such a creature in Celstia or maybe Wydmoor, the only places on the mainland the Petarans really trade. Racism, bigotry, even ignorant violence are all potentials for a Petaran in the mainland, but there is no institutionalized need for genocide or anything. But, again, someone tries to set up a Petaran church, there's going to be swift retribution. -gm

Thoughts From On High: Considering Wydmoor is a nexus of outcasts from at least three different cultures, I'm surprised all of your followers are Wydmoor natives. There is something to be said for that, and it totally makes sense, but you might want to consider that a few of these cats immigrants, you can access some other Knowledge: Local locales. -gm

One horrible thing about the "levels" of NPC classes is that they don't correspond to actual levels--the CR of an NPC with a single level in a PC class is actually 1/2. Another Tome tweak (and I'm going to talk about this thing until the day I die, THANKS JONES) is to make Leadership correspond to CRs rather than levels for followers (and make the cohort be always PC level - 2, period), allowing the followers to be made up of anything that makes sense (18 CR 1/3 dogs, anyone?). -[[User:Slitherrr|Slitherrr]]
: I actually like the 1/2 CR for NPC levels thing, and generally stick to that when tabulating XP. I also basically make the Cohort gain levels when you do, though I have some homebrew rules I'm spitballing in my head to deal with potential balance issues from Item Creation Cohorts like Egg. I'm actually not against subbing in (reasonable and appropriate) CR monsters in place of humanoid followers, but I'm not adopting any new tables that aren't from the core guide. So, yeah, if you want to have your 10 level one followers be 20 dogs and your cohort be an animal trainer and open a kennel, that's all good. The more diversity in Leadership the better, but OTOH, I look at Leadership as much more of an Off-Camera activity, rather than endless waves of meatshields. -gm
: Only marginally better. She's still essentially a refugee.

For the sake of sanity, these first 10 followers - plus your punishment aristocrat - will be the "middle management" of your operation. They'll be the ones to advance in level as your score increases, and the new level ones will be the faceless drones you only interact with at the office Explosion Day party. Cohorts levels will always be dictated by leadership score, with all rule-based maximums in effect.
: This applies to Kib. But, only a stable of 10. He doesn't have a punishment aristocrat.
:: I might make a rule than when you hit leadership 20, your stable opens to 12 if it becomes an issue, but I doubt it will. I sort of expect these guys to be more flavor than sustenance. -gm
Its not my fault that pills and liquor have addled your brain and you can't remember what's going on anymore! --[[User:Msallen|Msallen]]
::: Haha, I agree. Though, in fact, it was probably the booze that made me say PC classes.
::: In fact, I was actually confused because I made a post to the wiki last night that didn't seem to take where I said Cohort = PC Class; Follower = NPC class. Just take the same point buy, and make them Warriors & Experts, but probably not adepts or aristocrats. This actually shouldn't screw up your plans and party too much.
::: In fact, I *do* appreciate not having to come up with personalities and such. -gm
:::: Yeah, these are easy to manage as NPC classes. Can I have one adept? --[[User:Msallen|Msallen]]
::::: I didn't think it would really mess up your plans too much. And, yes, you may have a single shaman OR adept, but not both. -gm

So, tl'dr - I thought I had made a post about this last night, but it seems not to have saved. Boo.
: The only thing not covered somewhere else by now, especially relevant after today -> I think the arguments about "simulationism" have merit, but are not exactly totally aligned with each other. The weight and coin problem, for example, I agree isn't worth really losing sleep over when you're talking about the few dozen coin you pick up off random pushovers. That is wallet money and probably gets cashed up or down without much hassle at various inns. However, at some point, I consider a score large enough that it transcends petty accounting legalism and becomes a legitimate "logistics puzzle" of its own. When you're talking about something like a dragon horde, for example, that has a great amount of mixed coin and armor loot, there's no reason to think the party can just whisk away everything, and so sorting out the opportunity costs of the initial grab become a de facto challenge all its own. Additionally, in terms of armor and equipment, keeping track of weights becomes a game balance issue in addition to an accounting one: it's hardly fair that someone like you, or helen, or trav, or Sarah should be able to lug around as much stuff as someone who bought up to 16 strength. Now, the bag of holding helps, but at the end of the day I think items with non-negligible weight and/or bulk like weapons, armor, shields, pianos, or animal companions need to be tracked versus encumbrance. Not only to make sure that the 8 strength bard isn't walking around with three sorts of armor and 6 types of weapon. Nitpicking is one thing, but the trade off quandaries provided by encumbrance are a wide enough gaming value and expectation that they appear across the board, from roguelikes, to cRPGs to tabletop. We're not talking material components for spells here or tracking every torch, some of these are reasonable thinks to track the encumbrance of. -gm
:: Yawn. I was having trouble sleeping, but this totally helped. Thanks! --[[User:Msallen|Msallen]]

I look forward to seeing the breakdown when you have 128 first level followers.
: I think a handful of examples will be sufficient! --[[User:Msallen|Msallen]]
:: Well, I also assume (other than your 2nd level punitive aristocrat), when you get higher level followers, it'll just be this original stable of "favorites" advancing, and lower level nobodies replacing them. Kind of like being in on the ground floor of a startup. It also means that Kib's buddy can at least have ambitions up to 5th or 6th level as an extra. Heh. -gm
::: The aristocrat must always be your highest level follower. Though, on the up side, it might help legitimize your operation. -gm
:::: And, since that's harsh, you can pick which client family he (or she) come from. -gm
== DM Approved? ==

This spell, of course, is subject to GM veto, but I figure most stuff from WotC books or Dragon are ok? I want to check because there are also a few (mediocre-to-okay) Druid spells in ''Complete Divine'' that we might want to bring, and 1-2 Paladin spells that have their uses, too. -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]
: Yeah, generally speaking WotC and Dragon are both considered as close to canonical as you can get. Mongoose Publishing, Swords and Sorcery, etc. less so. Still, I'd rather you put the spell and stuff on the talk page and leave the actual page blank until spells get approved. I think having players add and suggest is a great, I am just leery of confusing our poor spellcasters with what is and is not yet approved. -gm
:: Cool, thanks for the clarification on process for DM approval. Counter-proposal: What if we create the pages as normal but we put <nowiki>{{pendingapproval}}</nowiki> template? It would look like this: {{pendingapproval}} Could we instead post them as a normal spell/feat/class and put that bright red above it? If you reject it, just delete it. The cool thing about this process is that you get this awesome page to reference: [[:Category:Pending Approval]] -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]

== Spell Strength ==
: It's an... odd spell on many levels, though, and I can't say I'm a *huge* fan of it. Direct, unerring damage is not, generally, the purview of the cleric class. Will save for half is just a very .... strange.... save. Also, 60 points of max damage against undead from a second level spell doesn't really strike me as all that balanced.
: I mean, I think this spell feels *at least* as good as most of the 2nd level sor/wiz damage spells, and that's clearly not so great from a class balance point of view.
:: I can't disagree with you, but to play devil's advocate: The wording I picked ("unerring") isn't how they wrote it. For the spirit of the spell, see the screenshots for the actual wording that Complete Divine, [http://www.amazon.com/Compendium-Dungeons-Dragons-Fantasy-Roleplaying/dp/0786937025 Spell Compendium], and DDO use. I changed it to avoid copyright, but the original wording seems spiritually good (better for a paladin/judgement spell, IMHO):
<blockquote><blockquote><div style="float:left;"> http://i.imgur.com/OXVf0.png </div> <div style="float:left;"> http://content.screencast.com/users/Mattie/folders/Jing/media/b6d016e8-bbd7-4673-9241-4600715fbb76/2011-03-19_1446.png </div><div style="clear:both"> </div></blockquote></blockquote>
:: So Helen and I love this for flavor. As for damage, it's solid, indeed. I wouldn't put it on par with Sorc/Wiz (searing ray averaging 1d6/level, right?), but it is strong for Cleric which is an exception for most of the added divine content from WotC (probably to boost FS class). Note that undead seem to have stronger will saves than anything else, so it's not going to be the world's best spell against them. Range is really tight, too. -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]
::: So it's here (and because numbers are my thing),
:::*''Scorching ray'' (level 2 spell) is 1d6 per (level + 1) in groups of four (4d6 at level 3, 8d6 level 7, 12d6 level 11 [max]), at close range, not unerring (ranged touch attack)
:::*The canonical unerring spell, ''magic missile'', is 1d4+1 per level, at ridiculous range, with no save, but with a hard counter (''shield''), and is level 1. It's then 2.5 damage per level, compared to 1.75 for ''deific vengeance'' against non-undead (3.5 vs those).
:::*''Acid arrow'', 2d4 + 1 plus (2d4 + 1) per three levels (up to six), over time, level 2, giving 6.5 + (2.5)/level, with caveats (acid can be neutralized and whatnot).
:::* Burning sphere, 2d6/level with caveats galore, level 2.
::: ''Deific Vengeance'' doesn't compete too crazily in this sphere. Against anything but undead, it's outclassed pretty easily by magic missile in every respect--range, damage, versatility--except specifically in the case of ''shield''. Against undead, it has the Will save issue mentioned above, but is otherwise better (which falls within the Cleric's wheelhouse). Far be it from me to give any more power to the most OP class in the game, but I think this spell doesn't do that too horribly much. -[[User:Slitherrr|Slitherrr]]
:::: Ah, math, the unerring language of logic. I suppose I can't argue with that, and 2 is sort of a weak level for cleric'n anyway. Sounds good. And, yes, generally stuff from WotC sources will get favorable nods from me, but I want to limit the influx of new mechanics to a pace that I can keep track of. I still get too many "wait, what?" moments from the druid. -gm

::: Also, how does *not having a damage type* fit into those calcs? I really don't like that there is no tag on that damage, not even S/P/B. -gm

== More comparison spells ==

Just to compare for this spell, here are some other decent cleric damage spells at level two from WotC. It's clear they want to give Clerics a tad of a boost in damage ability.
: When I see a damage spell that says "Clr 2, Sor/Wiz 2" all kinds of alarms start going off. Now, that doesn't *necessarily* mean I'll be against such spells, but I'd almost certainly make it Clr 3, Sor/Wiz 2. If it's a balanced to be a 2nd arcane, there are no circumstances where it would also fit as a 2nd divine. I mean, Fireball (3rd) outclasses Flame Strike (5th) in many respect, and most respects until such levels that an arcane isn't even thinking about third level spell slots. Probably worth noting at this point, too, that cleric's don't really *get* damage spells until the upper levels, because I don't think is is wise (the hallmark of the class) to give destructive power to neophytes and middle managers. Low level clerics already get to cast wearing plate mail, attack with a great BaB and the ability to boost all their important stats, all while being able to heal. And turn undead. I don't feel awful that their spell slots don't also mete the beat (tm). -gm
: I'm less opposed to these becoming Sor/Wiz spells, and I reserve the right to have adepts shoot them at you as Lvl+1 Spells. >:) ON NOTICE. -gm
:: Very good points all. The Clr 2, Sorc/Wiz 2 thing does set off some alarm bells with me, too-- pretty much all of these examples look like that. Deific Vengeance seems more on-flavor for clerics than any of the below ones. -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]
::: Indeed. I'm with you on DV, too, I'm just concerned because it's the only thing I can think of that does generic damage. Not even weapon damage or slashing damage. Just "damage."
:::: That's easy to fix. Would it make more sense as "force" damage, or some sort of "necromantic" damage? -[[User:Slitherrr|Slitherrr]]
::::: Force bypasses DR, so we can safely assume that is right out. -gm
::::: In DDO they made it Good damage: http://compendium.ddo.com/wiki/Spell:Deific_Vengeance -Mattie
:::::: Hmmm. Then only good people can use it, though. Perhaps "alignment" damage, with "alignment" being one of your two alignment types. (Chaotic, Lawful, Good, and Evil), which means a true neutral couldn't cast this. Which, you know, I'm ok with. -gm

:: Also, ever since Herdgate back at the temple, I've thought about tagging some of the wiki spells as "Rare" or "Difficult" and require time and spellcraft checks to unlock them. Because I'm a prick, but it's probably to late to clamp close that door. -gm
::: Maybe some of the massive/war spells should require more substantial material components in addition to the time required? I mean, Stoneskin is nice at 250gp/pop... yet they can get 90 wolves for 54 rounds for a negligible fee? Either way, I'm not looking forward to the day when Summon Herd is cast on us, so I'm 100% in favor of nerfing it before it hurts someone important. ;) -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]
:::: This actually crossed my mind. The solution, which you have just reminded me of, is simple and elegant. Changes the entire way the spell is approached by PCs, while still leaving it open for me to drop. Did you Guess? . . . . .
::::
::::
:::: Minor. Experience. Cost.
::::: Effectively no cost for NPCs, permanent level-gaining opportunity cost for PCs? Works better in this campaign with the XP-gaining achievements around, but still seems like it would either be pretty harsh or negligible with no in-between. -[[User:Slitherrr|Slitherrr]]

=== Frost Breath ===
This is from the Spell Compendium. 30ft cone ain't bad at all, so I'll probably seek approval for this, too. :) I think this used to be called Frost Fingers before they reprinted it.
<blockquote><pre>
FROST BREATH
Evocation [Cold]
Level: Clr 2, Drd 2, Sorc/Wiz 2
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: 30 ft.
Area: Cone-shaped burst
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Reflex half
Spell Resistance: Yes
Giving a forceful exhale across your cupped
hand, your breath shoots forth tinged with
frost and crystals of ice.
You breathe a cone of intense cold at
your foes. The spell deals 1d4 points of
cold damage per two caster levels (maximum
5d4). In addition, all creatures
damaged by the frost breath that fail
their Reflex save are dazed for 1 round
by the sudden shock of cold.
Material Component: Three drops
of water or fragments of ice (which
are held in a cupped palm and blown
toward the target).
</pre></blockquote>
=== Cloud of Knives ===
The flavor of this one is a bit odd and I'm not as keen on it as I was when I first read it. (I think Spiritual Hammer holds this spot well, and this doesn't seem a good Sorc/Wiz spell anyway.) I still haven't gotten over the idea that Clerics shouldn't use pointy things. ''Cloud of Knives'' does scale well, though. This is from PHB2, so I'm kinda surprised I had never heard of it before.
<blockquote>http://content.screencast.com/users/Mattie/folders/Jing/media/645c6dde-89f5-47e0-af46-6502497041dc/2011-03-19_1424.png</blockquote>
Not unerring, but the attack is + level + abilitymod, so it's less damage but slightly better to-hit than Spiritual Weapon (though now I'm seeing Spiritual Weapon as a better spell than I recall). A level 9 cleric would effectively get 9 individual rolls of 1d6+3 damage (at surely +12 to hit). It can even be enhanced to use silver knives. -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]
=== Venomous Volley ===
From Dragon 330:

http://content.screencast.com/users/Mattie/folders/Jing/media/7f9ba2f0-2434-43a3-a0dc-accfb7f99f35/2011-03-19_1443.png

=== Lava Missile ===
Probably worth seeking approval for, too, but it's easy to argue that this isn't in-flavor for our world. It is quite nice, though. From WotC, FRealms book ''Serpent World'':
<blockquote> http://content.screencast.com/users/Mattie/folders/Jing/media/70631641-55c3-453d-b31f-af3dc9b68b6a/2011-03-19_1501.png </blockquote>
This hints that WotC is okay with damage spells being 1-level weaker than mage spells in terms of damage (though with saving throws). Yet catching people on fire is rather cool, too. -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]

It gives you [http://wiki.memphisgamers.com/index.php?title=Category:Pending_Approval a cool category] so you don't lose track of things needing approval, it also lets us add content without creating lonely Talk pages that might get lost. I want to add/propose more flavorful stuff (because I'm knee deep in Hero Lab), so I want to get that process denied or approved if you're okay with trying it for a bit. -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]
: I don't mind you guys putting stuff up and adding the red bar, but I'm afraid people will be pretty upset if I reject something they spent a ton of time inputing. But, as a way of doing things it's not terrible, it's clear enough. although I'm not sure it's technically better than putting things on the talk page. Now, for future reference, when we get to the point we're creating protocols and procedures for submission, etc. is the day I step down and let someone else take over.
: Also, I'm not going to be super thrilled seeing 500 new spells and feats appear on the wiki, which is one of my fears. I've tried to introduce new concepts, rules, spells, and feats at a slow and measured pace, and have only included about 1% of what I've skimmed from my old Dragons. This isn't just because I'm lazy, although I am, but also because every new add brings with it all kinds of baggage. Rules Creep is a *huge* problem for D&D in general, and to play-efficiency and balance in particular and Outside Sources have *always* been a tremendous pain in the ass for DMs, especially considering what PLAYERS look for from outside content is far different than what GMs look for.
: So, TL;DR, feel free to post all the content you want. I am going to drag my feet on approving it, but some of it will be approved, although most of it will be rejected outright and my response to argument will be "Court of Last Resort," aka "I'm not arguing about this." -gm

==Not Urgent, But Here So It Doesn't Get Lost In the Shuffle==
*[[Talk:Team Mefight Thirtieth Session]]: There's a large pile of ungenerated scrolls in the MeFight Bag of Holding that will eventually need to be genned up. -[[User:Slitherrr|Slitherrr]]
: Any idea where they came from? I might have it in the notes somewhere.... I know there was a spellbook from the gnome guy.
:: -0: Disrupt Undead, Light, Detect Magic, Detect Poison,
:: -1: Magic Missile, Burning Hands, Detect Secret Doors, Detect Undead, Identify
:: -2: Flame Sphere, Web, Command Undead
:: -3: Flame Arrow, Haste, Dispel Magic
::: Yeah, we got them from the Vault. We were shoving scrolls into the bag while looking for a particular one to help out Thed. -[[User:Slitherrr|Slitherrr]]
: Ah, yes. Of course. *twitch* *twitch* -gm
:: Yeah, probably our only true haul of "treasure" type stuff. -[[User:Slitherrr|Slitherrr]]

=== Deific Vengeance ===
If you get time, please check out the long spell discussion over at [[Talk:Deific Vengeance]] before the next Silverwalker game. Depending on your thoughts on that spell, I may also seek approval for one or more of the other spells listed there (especially Cloud of Daggers from PHB2). Not a big deal, but it's certainly an interesting topic, on how much oomph Clerics should get in your world. -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]

=== Wave of Vengeance ===
Mose started some discussion on Google Wave, calling out old {{Oscart}} if your plan was to get some initial role-play back-and-forth going before the next game. (Even if Germain hasn't chimed-in yet, curse him.) -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]
: Germain can't wave at work anymore (they blocked it!), and at home he doesn't really use his computer much :( I'm afraid wave will always be Germain-lite --~~
:: They... Blocked wave? That's one of the stupidest policies I've ever heard of. -[[User:Slitherrr|Slitherrr]]
::: I work for a giant British corporation. Stupid policies are their bread and butter... or tea and cakes or whatever ;) --[[User:Msallen|Msallen]]
:: Ack! Let's move that kind of thing over to the wiki then. -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]
I'll have to ponder over the class. On one hand, I think he earned some time working the street and dealing with powerful people, so a level with mad skills would be good. On the other, there are some hot 4th level spells that could make me a much bigger thorn in the guild's side, which I think will be a bigger deal soon. --[[Special:Contributions/74.68.100.149|74.68.100.149]]
Also, I'd like to put clairvoyance on the wish list for spells. :: Well, I've got a plan for him if he starts crafting that may, in the long term. Basically, just keep track of his experience spent on crafting and I'll take care of the rest. -gm
I'll have to have a little chat with him about being so frank around the other PCs--I think its best that he and I sugar-coat ideas before we present them to any of the damn hippies in the party. His totally reasonable comment about selling food caused all sorts of silly moral issues for the party! --[[User:Msallen|Msallen]]
:::: For the record, Mose wouldn't have any qualms with you guys selling the rarer/luxury foodstuffs to the upper class at a premium. Seems like there would be more money to be made in hard-to-get stuffs for the rich than overcharging the penniless. -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]
::::: I'm sure that's what he was suggesting and Al just took it out of context ;) --[[User:Msallen|Msallen]]

Actually, there is a *lot* more to be had selling basic foodstuff than luxury items. Scarce items with low demand becoming more scarce is nothing compared to basic staples going from reasonably common to scarce. Fact is, prices are going to skyrocket with or without your help: Egg isn't creating the opportunity, just taking advantage of it. That's just the nature of the siege economy, and you can be sure that when the Thieves' Guild start shipping food in, it won't be to open a soup kitchen. -gm
: Well, you painted the grain supplies as in good shape so I assumed people in the town were good with basic foodstuffs, etc. Hence my thought that right now the townies would want to pay more for scarce luxury foods and wine versus the simpler stuff. Anyway, that's Mose's preference to try to make money off the rich rather than the poor, if possible. :) -[[User:Mattie|Mattie]]
:: Given that the cities pop has reduced by half at least and the fact that the city didn't really make much of an effort getting grain to the refugees anyways, this is a good point. Seems like the grain reserves should be well stocked for some time. --[[User:Msallen|Msallen]]
::: Unless it's been sitting long enough that spoilage is a factor. If this world had an equivalent to John Adams, I'd say the sensible thing would be to charge for the food so a few people don't take all of it and hoard it to resell at a much higher price than even you guys would charge, but I doubt Mose or anyone else has had a grounding in Economics (Germain might, except that the discipline as we know it probably doesn't exist on the Mainland, except in a very primitive form). -[[User:Slitherrr|Slitherrr]]
:::: All that is true, there is a grain ration being doled to citizens. In the camps, however, (or what is left of them) prices for even common food is huge, not that anyone has any money to spend on them anyway. Non-grain staples - food, butter, booze - are going to be expensive even inside the city, although the reopened smuggling corridors and drastically reduced population help with that some. -gm

== Fitting In ==
We'll have to see how we want to play it. I had a similar discussion with Slitherrr about *****************, his coming cohort. Basically, do you want to play and manage every part of the guy, have me run the guys personality but control him in combat, or have me control everything with you giving general commands?

Likewise, advancement - you or me? I would think he obviously sticks to Wizard, though depending on what kind of work you have him doing early on it might make sense RP wise to take a second level in professional, as well as just being a good add. Prof 2/Wizard X gets a +1 AC bonus and a net of +4 skill points, over Prof 1/Wizard X, I believe? Prof 4/Wizard X is a much more substantial investment in the nonmagical side of thing, which is costing probably two spell levels for +2 AC bonus, a net of +12 skill points and Uncanny Dodge.

: Really up to you. I'm sure you don't want to play another character, so I'll make the decisions for him in game time. He's pretty much a squishy buffer in MMO terms, so in general I expect he'll stick close to LE and cast buffs. As for advancement, I'd say straight wizard unless there is a really compelling reason to go prof 2. Multiclassing casters is a lot harsher than martial characters except for a splash. Also, he'll have plenty of skill points, and Germ is happy to have a knowledge guy around, which wizards do fine at.
: Germ in general would prefer a cohort that pushes back and has his own opinions--he's not looking for a yes-man, he's looking for another set of eyes and a sharp mind to bounce ideas off of. So in general I'll make the decisions to lighten your load, and you veto anything you don't like. --[[User:Msallen|Msallen]]

96.5.63.20:

Alright, you people who know the rules better than I do, I have a couple of questions. The brown bear has a base attack of +4 and Str of 27 (+8), but it's standard claw attack roll is only +11. Why not +12 (base attack+strength bonus)? I'm working on figuring out Girl's bonuses, etc. He's got 8 HD (2 more than a normal brown bear because of animal companion bonuses), and the animal companion page says it has the same base attack as a druid of a level equal to the animal's HD. So, that's +6/+1. Girl's strength is 28 (+9), so it seems like his attack roll should be +15/+10. Is this right??

Second question involves saving throws for (wait for it) ... brown bears. The animal companion page says "An animal companion has good Fortitude and Reflex saves (treat it as a character whose level equals the animal’s HD)." It doesn't specify character class, so I assumed druid. An 8th level druid's reflex save is +2. Add the bear's dex bonus (+2. Girl has a 14 dex instead of 13 cuz he's awesome) to get +4. This is all well and good, but the standard non-animal-companion reflex save for a brown bear is +6. Fortitude comes out better (+6 for 8th level druid, +4 for bear's con), but it seems wrong that his reflex save would be lower than a standard bear's. Am I doing something wrong in figuring this? If not, Matt, I need a DM ruling. Reflex save +4 or +6?

And one more thing (not a rules question). Girl has the special quality scent. This will be helpful any time he's on watch. :)

-- from email

And some extra, not from email:
* Standard brown bears have 51 hp (6d8+24). Ignoring the con bonus, that comes out to 27 for the 6d8, which is 4.5 per hid die. Since Girl is an 8 HD brown bear, I figured his hp as 8 * 4.5 + 32 = 60. Is this a reasonable way to figure HP?

* Skill points: One per level for a bear? Int is 2, which is a -4 modifier, but there's a minimum of 1 skill point per level, right? I would apply them based on the bear's HD, which is currently 8 (two above a standard bear), so I should (I think) have two skill points to dole out.

* Feats: Gain them as a druid does, but base them on HD? So, one at 3rd, one at 6th, one at 9th, etc?

:: There are a bunch of complicated rules, but I don't think you'll be gaining extra feats and stuff.
:: Also, be aware that he gets almost NO special abilities.
:: <i>Should she select an animal companion from one of these alternative lists, the creature gains abilities as if the character’s druid level were lower than it actually is. Subtract the value indicated in the appropriate list header from the character’s druid level and compare the result with the druid level entry on the table to determine the animal companion’s powers. (If this adjustment would reduce the druid’s effective level to 0 or lower, she can’t have that animal as a companion.)</i>
:: So it gets only gets abilities based on Druid Level - 6. So this moots a lot of the advancement talk, as a 2nd level druid companion doesn't get any of that stuff.

Trav/Al: Yeah, I'm not really worried about the special abilities from the "Alternative Animal Companion" table. He's got Link, Share Spells, and Evasion. But under the "Bonus HD" section of "Animal Companion Basics," it says:

''Extra eight-sided (d8) Hit Dice, each of which gains a Constitution modifier, as normal. Remember that extra Hit Dice improve the animal companion’s base attack and base save bonuses. An animal companion’s base attack bonus is the same as that of a druid of a level equal to the animal’s HD. An animal companion has good Fortitude and Reflex saves (treat it as a character whose level equals the animal’s HD). '''An animal companion gains additional skill points and feats for bonus HD as normal for advancing a monster’s Hit Dice.'''''

I guess my question is: What's "normal for advancing a monster's Hit Dice?"
:"Normal for advancing a monster's hit dice" is take whatever he has at normal HD, then add to it in the progression. If you took, say, a black bear, it'd be 3 HD + 2, S D C I N C of 19+1 13+1 15 2 12 6, BAB of +3 (the BaB of a 5 HD monster, which, helpfully enough, is the BaB of a 5th-level Druid), two extra skill points, normal bear abilities (no feats, feats aren't gained for HD increase, only actual levels), AC of 16 (1 more from DEX bonus, 2 more from Natural AC bonus), link, share spells, evasion, and an attack list that looks like "2 claws +8 (6 + 1 from ST + 1 from BaB) melee (1d4+5) and bite +3 melee (1d6+3)
::Oh, and the black bear's saves would be +6, +6, +2 (diff between 3 HD and 5 HD is +1/+1/+0, then there's +1 to Ref for DX bonus). This is because the brown bear's strong saves are Ref and Fort, and his weak save is Will, which you can determine by taking current saves, subtracting bonuses from stats and whatnot, and comparing what's left to the strong/weak progressions on a character class for that HD. In this case, +5 - 2 = 3, +4 - 1 = 3 , +2 - 1 = 1. Strong saves at 3 HD are 3, weak saves at 3 HD are 1. -[[User:Slitherrr|Slitherrr]]

:In your case, Druid 8 taking brown bear (level minus 6, not 3 as you seem to think above), gives the 1st-2nd level abilities on the Animal Companion Basics chart (+0 bonus HD, +0 AC, +0 ST/DX, 1 bonus trick, link, share spells). In other words, it's a brown bear with an extra trick and an empathic link, and nothing else. -[[User:Slitherrr|Slitherrr]]

::Start [[User:Travis|Travis]] Al's a level 9 druid now, so level-6 makes the bear's class level 3. So 1st-5th level abilities are +2 HD, +2 AC, ST/DX +1, 2 bonus tricks, link, share spells, and evasion. So my brown bear would be 8 HD; SDCINC 27+1, 13+1, 19, 2, 12, 6; BaB of an 8 HD monster (which is 6?); two extra skill points; normal bear abilities; no feats (but why do the rules say "An animal companion gains additional skill points and '''feats''' for bonus HD as normal for advancing a monster’s Hit Dice"??); AC of 18 (normal brown bear is 15); link, share spells, and evasion; and attacks (assuming I'm right about BaB of 6) "2 claws+14 (+9 from ST, -1 for size) with damage 1d8+9 each and bite+8 with damage 2d6+4. Saves would be base of Ref +6, Fort +6, Will +2, then add Dex bonus+2, Con bonus +3, Wis bonus +1 to get Ref 8, Fort 9, Will 3. Is that right? My 8 HD brown bear companion would be a lot like a regular polar bear, but with +1 ST/DX, etc.

::Thanks for the help. End [[User:Travis|Travis]]

RE: Hit dice and AC--The bear gets a -1 to hit and AC because of his size ([http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/movementPositionAndDistance.htm#bigandLittleCreaturesInCombat Large]). I've attached a reference. --[[User:Msallen|Msallen]]
:Ah, indeed.  Thanks. --[[User:Travis|Travis]]

Emerging from their hideout, the party began to make its way to the High Priestess's quarters (but not before Thed could surreptitiously pocket the Captain's platinum ring). Many zombies and a very impressive fireball later, the party found the Manager's office, just next to the Mayor's office. Stopping in quickly to see if any information could be salvaged from the rubbish, Thed managed to pop the first lock on the vault door in one corner. Out of surprise, Kib called in the party to barricade the room's busted door and give Thed enough time to crack the rest of the vault. Sure enough, with some work, he managed the inner door and was immediately confronted with the sight of more coins that he could imagine. Without a thought, he dove into the room and began swimming among the coins, hardly noticing the onset of blindness and disease (and a flash of lightning avoided with completely unconscious savvy) caused by the traps he had just set off.

After shouting the immediacy of the situation into the enraptured Gnome, the party found themselves in a pickle, unable to retrieve Thed from the vault without setting off the traps themselves (potentially twice). They set about getting Thed to search the various chests in the room for restoratives, and are even now rifling through the meticulously labeled paraphenalia in search of what they need.
*If we can safely retrieve Thed, we're sitting on a ton of useful stuff. Kib will work to contain Thed's urge to take all of it, but at the same time, I think he'll be able to rationalize commandeering a certain amount of the useful expendables.
