Kib Absold is a recently unemployed Odessan soldier. He is one of three recruited to help out the town of Draglet, and is currently roaming in the foothills north of Kred with his three tiny compatriots, Thed, Thoven and Gilerl Gilerlson.
Description
Kib Absold is 6'2" and 195 lbs, with dark hair, dark eyes, and olive skin. He is classically handsome by Odessan standards, but not exceptionally so.

His straight hair is worn loose at about shoulder length, kept out of his eyes by a simple leather band, in the current style preferred by Odessan officers. He keeps himself and his equipment clean and in good order, with the due diligence born of his military training. His face is always clean-shaven, a state maintained by the razor-sharp edge on the dagger he keeps about his person.

Kib prefers the sensibility of adventuring clothing, but is quite comfortable in more stylish attire. Currently, his wardrobe consists solely of the two pairs of Odessan battle-dress he possessed when discharged (with insignia removed). Whatever he wears, he prefers it to be clean and in good repair, whenever possible.

Kib is used to command, and he habitually speaks in a tone meant to carry long distances. His bearing is open, but can quickly become very intimidating. He tries to make and execute his decisions as quickly as possible--while he recognizes the value of considering all possibilities, he is used to dealing with time-sensitive situations that demand a decision, and overdue deliberation invokes his rare impatience.

Kib gets along well enough with all sorts of people, and is generally willing to allow people their way if they do not impede his progress. He is even willing to accept such radical notions as Servitor Abolitionism, but is never fundamentalist in his ideals, and recognizes the realities of the societies of which he is a part.

Kib stays generally within the framework of Law when he can, but is not overly bothered about breaking a rule if the result is worth the potential trouble with the authorities. In this way, he achieves results without overly rankling his superiors' sensibilities.

Background
Pre-Military Life
Kib was born to a family of lower merchant class, the fifth of ten children (third son), in Farrandon, Odessa. His father, Garn, a stonemason, was a keen businessman whose acumen brought him enough money to obtain a noble title, and all the rights and privileges granted therewith--the first such title awarded in hundreds of years. Kib was thus raised as a nobleman, and groomed for a life in the service of His Majesty King Aden as an officer in the military.

Military Service
Kib served for three years in Odessa's armed forces. After receiving training for his commissioned rank, he was assigned a platoon attached to the 36th Regiment out of Cebridon. He spent his first year on campaign with a peacekeeping force in Alexia that was tasked with managing dissident elements in that country, following a series of tariff reforms that, to the people who could see it, symbolized the final nail in the coffin of Alexian sovereignty. There, the action focused mainly on policing activities, and never in pitched battle.

As events quieted down in Alexia, Kib's platoon was reassigned to the 74th, to fight in skirmishes on the Celstian/Odessan border. It was here that Kib saw his first real battlefield action. He earned a reputation for breaking with orders when it suited him to do so, but since this more often resulted in better outcomes than not, he generally received commendation rather than approbation from his superiors. Although those immediately above him on the chain of command saw him as unreliable, the higher-ups thought of him as a man who could get the job done. After a year and a half in Celestia, Kib was on his way to a promotion, when his career was dramatically interrupted.

Family Scandal
While Kib was in Celestia, the Absold family began finding itself under pressure at home. After a series of events that Kib was not around to witness, Garn was charged, tried and sentenced for a variety of charges, ranging from bribery and corruption to borderline treason. The Absold family was stripped of its noble title, and Garn was tossed into jail. Kib found himself transferred to Gildenhome before he even knew of his family's fate, and while there he was summarily discharged and left to his own devices. He decided immediately that he would use any means necessary to find his way home and restore his family's reputation.

Tactical Philosophy
The Odessan infantry mainly makes use of the longspear to support its longbowmen, but while in Alexia, Kib picked up a respect for the skilled use of the more martial pole arms, and has adapted their use into his own arsenal. He also carries a shield and warhammer for close quarters, and a shortbow for long-distance situations. He is also a fair hand in a fist-fight, and can handle himself in mounted combat.

In general, he prefers compromise to combat, but he has spent enough time in dangerous situations to be willing to rapidly engage his foes in battle when necessary. He knows the value of live prisoners, and he carries a respect for his opponents' goals and lives, even when they are at odds to his own.

He strives to kill only when necessary, which, to his distaste, is far too often. He is unwilling to kill helpless prisoners if he does not perceive them as a threat, although he has no qualms against dispatching a helpless enemy if he thinks that not doing so will cause great enough future harm.

Goals
Kib would eventually like to see his father's reputation and title restored. He is convinced that nothing that his father was accused of could have happened, and knows he must hurry, before the stay in prison takes its toll.

Kib's immediate goals are to find enough work to get him enough money to start finding the information he needs to find. He knows that a regular job won't cut it, and stories of the vast riches recovered by soldiers of fortune and adventure-seekers have given him hope.

After the happenings in Kred, Kib has begun keeping a journal of his travels, to consolidate ideas. In it, he only mentions his real goals in obtuse, roundabout ways, to prevent the casual reader from learning about, in particular, his family's plight--he does not think about this, but if he were, he would surmise that he has some interest in keeping at least part of his identity hidden.

Career Notable Victories
*King Mab, a Kobold Sorc 3/Fighter 1, in single combat. NOTE: NOT A REAL KING (slain).<br />
*The Masked Gnome, with Thed, Thoven and Gilerl (subdued and captured).<br />
*Swingin' Dan and The Professor, with Thed, Thoven, Gilerl, Zealeus, and a valiant band of Kred's finest, who stood their ground to their last (if only because death came too quickly for them to even scream).<br />
*ZOMG HOLY CRAP SO MANY KOBOLDS.

Contacts
*Captain Kleptinax has seen first-hand what Kib and his group can do, and has also received from him a gift in the form of a dozen Wydmoor coins, rare in the East, for his collection. He also inhabits Kred, and thus has reason to like him even more.
*Everyone in Kred knows who Kib is, and anyone who would have something to lose from a Kobold invasion, and isn't a (fairly short-sighted) smuggler, probably likes him.
*Heston was an Alexian adolescent who lived near Kib's camp while he was on duty there. Originally, he would provide information in exchange for food and coin. Eventually, Absold become good friends with him and his family, often sharing meals under their roof, and covertly supporting them when they needed assistance.
*Uldern Garrolea, a distant cousin of the Absold family, is Kib's closest childhood friend, whom he has not seen since beginning his military career. When Kib last saw Uldern, he was studying to become a Journeyman blacksmith, following his father's trade.
*All the men in Kib's squad became very close to him, but Cartil Durrendon, as Kib's right hand, was particularly so. A towering giant of a man, eschewing the more traditional longspear and in favor of his family's zweihander, he had a cutting wit and an enormous capacity for drink. In Alexia, he was a good companion with whom to chatter away the dull hours on sentry. In Celestia, he was an invaluable asset, and in the year and a half spent skirmishing there, both managed to pull each other out of scrapes that would have spelled their untimely deaths at Celstian hands.
*Kib Absold has six siblings (out of nine--two died shortly after birth, the other after sixteen months of life). He is the last of three boys, and much younger than the other two. Growing up, he was closest to Lea, his immediately older sister. Last he saw, Lea had completed her Primary Measure in Histories, and was beginning work on her Secondary Measure.

Gilerl is a strange, wild Gnome, unlike any other of his kind, who currently finds himself travelling with Thed, Kib Absold, and Thoven. Savage and immensely unpredictable, he has nonetheless been completely loyal to his recently found comrades, for reasons that even he cannot fathom. He sits as a strange counterpart to Kib, who has taken some responsibility for the Gnome, keeping him under his wing and mitigating the wildest of his tendencies when in civilized company.

Background and Notes
Gilerl Gilerlson is a Gnome who was lost in the woods just after he had learned how to walk whose parents never managed to find. He wandered the forest for three days, often on his hands and knees, before he was found by the kindly wife of a hermit, and was nursed back to health.

The odd man who found Gilerl, profoundly eccentric and fanatically devoted to exploring the unknown, was intrigued by Gilerl's seemingly feral status, and so he constructed an elaborate, controlled environment to study the tiny Gnome. For a long while, Gilerl lived in his habitat as the eccentric's secret project, hidden even from the man's wife, who was told that the young Gnome had been given to an orphanage.

Three years passed, until the hermit's wife one day found him tending to the child she had been told was long gone. Passionately, she labored to convince her husband to take Gilerl out of the woods, where he had been alone for so long, and send him to be raised in a proper home. His years of solitude, however, kept Gilerl from every fully accepting his environment, and he was moved from home to home, with every foster family finding him simply too much trouble to handle. This continued until Gilerl was seven, when he was moved into the special care of a monastic order.

Gilerl was always curiously strong, his wild nature kept him in pursuits that made him stronger still. His reputation grew, as he could barely form a complete sentence in speech, but could life large rocks that grown Human men would struggle to move. This made him extremely useful to the monks, and Gilerl would follow their orders without complant.

One cold February day, a crippled man approaching middle-age came into the establishment. His name was Lindtwiss Nacklezig, and he adopted Gilerl on the spot. Gilerl's wildness had, by this time, subsided quite a bit, and he followed Lindtwiss readily enough.

The next few years were strange for Gilerl, who encouraged the Gnome's wildness, and helped him to harness it. Lindtwiss would commonly take Gilerl into the woods, teaching him about the virtues of wildness and encouraging him to take advantage of his wild nature, and harness the raging emotions that civilization had never quite tamed. Gilerl was offered many different armaments with which to unleash his rage, but always he settled for what was simplest--a large, blunt object.

All this Lindtwiss did, without explanation for his actions, until the boy Gnome turned 17, when he told his story:

"Gilerl," he said, "I have taught you many things about yourself, and about holding power inside you, keeping it barely restrained until you can unleash it upon those who would do you harm. I have taught you about the woods, and I have taught you good and evil. I have not, however, told you why I do this. Now, I shall.

"Many years ago, before I met you, I was a merchant. I plied the hills of Gildenhome, the dusty plains of Fresia, the windswept grasslands of Celestia, and many other places besides, bringing goods from one place to another. My kind were the very lifeblood of all Alexandria's kingdoms, and without the bonds that trade brings, all of our lands would be forever embroiled in turmoil.

"One night, I was escorting a cargo past Gildenhome's border, making my way into Port Turin. We had settled in for the night, trusting the Omnity's benevolence to keep us safe. That night, She betrayed our trust, for we were set upon by vicious bandits, who came out of the darkness without warning.

"My compatriots fought bravely, and though we fought them off, losing many good men in the process, the bandits in their spite had set aflame the cargo, destroying it completely. We had invested our all into these goods, and now, in a blink, it was all gone.

"My lame leg, here, serves to remind me of that day.

"Then, those men were the hunters. They preyed on the week hoping to squander the product of other mens' toil, and when they could not have what they sought, they vengefully tore it to shreds so that no other could enjoy it.

"But now, my boy, with what I have taught you, they will no longer be the hunters. Now, they will be the hunted."

Having brought up a very suggestible boy to do the act that he always wanted but never was able to do himself, he gave his blessings to Gilerl and sent him off into the forest, with instructions to follow whomever he would see and watch them from afar. If his prey would ever try to hurt anyone, it was his duty to kill them, to rip them apart and leave nothing resembling a living being in his wake.

He then began a new phase of his life. Roaming the wild environs of Gildenhome, he stolidly followed his mission. Many sought to take Gilerl out of the woods, and some even to kill him, but none yet managed to track down the elusive, tiny, murderous Gnome in his haunts.

Some time later, Gilerl found himself questioning his single-minded purpose. Sometimes, in his solitude, he would even ponder returning to society, and attempting to live has he had with the monks, where he had never quite fit in, but was always happy. It was in one such state of mind that he stumbled upon a party of adventurers making their way to Kred. Following, he witnessed the party being attacked, and after fulfilling his duty, rather than running off to seek new pray, he found himself curiously continuing to pursue the trio. Even more curiously, when noticed and told to come forward, he did so, rather than immediately running off. Thus, he joined with Thed, Thoven and Kib Absold, and it is in their company that he now finds himself.

*Swingin' Dan and The Professor, with Thed, Thoven, Gilerl, Zealeus, and a valiant band of *Kred's finest, who stood their ground to their last (if only because death came too quickly for them to even scream).<br />

<i>"If I had good information, I could quickly dispatch of the very people you fear. "</i>
Diplomacy Check (No Bonus) [31]
Bluff Check [19] (You gotta work on your buffs, mah man.)
Sense Motive [29]

You sense that she still does not believe your offers in regards to this. In fact, you see a laughter in her eyes as she you mention killing her employers. Not a superior sort of laughter, but definitely derisive. There is a strong sense of fatalism here. "I have no doubt you'd <i>try</i>."

Sense Motive (Final) (29)

You get the feeling that your words are having an affect. This is not the resistance of Gil and Holm, full of arrogance and threat and bluster. What you see before you now is despair, loss, and hopelessness.

As it is written, so let it be.

DC modifiers, meet Germain. Germain, meet DC modifiers. I expect you will not get along very well.
"All you have to do is cooperate with me. What do you think?" He concluded, in a warning tone, "think hard on your answer." "

Diplomacy (26); Sense Motive (21)

<i>You realize almost immediately that waking the other three up and proposing them an offer was a severe miscalculation. They are through and true Company Men, and Cinammon clearly is the lowest status person of the group. Not only are they resist helping you you, they begin to heckle and ridicule Cinammon, referencing what happened to Gil tormented final weeks, shattering her own morale. You're pretty sure what is driving Cinammon's new reluctance, but you're unclear now as to what drove her to agreed in the first place.</i>

Diplomancy (31); Sense Motive (14)

He turned again towards Cinnamon, his mind turning towards strategy. He could at least count on a few solid pieces of information now. "I would think it would be best to strike now, before they have time to react to the news of today. But you think we should go on the defensive? Why? What could be important enough to give them control of the battlefield?"

<i>Cinammon's eyes dart wildly between you and the three theives, who continue to whisper dire threats of retribution to both of you. She says nothing. </i>

- Merry Christmas. You overplayed your hand like a son-of-a-bitch, sorry. -gm
: Well, I wouldn't say I overplayed it. I assumed I wouldn't have a chance to get info out of Cinny before the other three woke up, so I figured winning them over was a necessity. If I knew you were playing softball from the beginning, I wouldn't have bothered.
: In any case, they are fools. Poor bastards.
:: Wait, I'm confused. I thought you woke them up to try to enlist their help, as well? -gm
:: Simul-edit! This is what OtherMatt had before it got edited away: Oh, a few questions. Can I tell which one is the most loyal to the company? Can I tell which one (aside from Cinny) is the most meek? How much time do I have before dark?
:: By the way, if you pay close attention, it should bring up an "Edit Conflict" screen if you try to save a page that has been edited while you were making changes. If it's not, then I'm not sure what's going on, because I've seen it a couple of times. -98.244.67.155
::: I have seen that window as well. -gm
::: Can I tell which one is the most loyal to the company? Sense Motive (28) - They are equally loyal and resistant.
::: How much time do I have before dark: Survival (12) - This has not taken that long, but it the days are still short. Maybe three hours, three and a half until total sunset? -gm

:::: Also, my mother's nickname for him is "clueless", don't expect him to notice the simu-edit just because of a four inch, yellow EDIT CONFLICT banner that pops up.
Of all the people to start FF. If you work in edrell slash, you're done here. ;) -gm
:"Gil and Holm were pathetic, yes, but tender, almost kind. Germain had often wondered what it would have been like, to explore their softer sides in a lonely moment."-Slitherrr
What did your NPC in Danrel's wardhouse say when I was interrogating Gil, Matt? "Do ye want me to do 'em with a broomstick, or more natural like? The later will cost ye more." --Msallen 16:29, 15 December 2009 (EST)
::: And you kept that in your notes, verbatim. A proud moment. That guy was just a sociopath, you know that particular ward was not so carefully maintained. Or, are you saying you want to go find that guy again? -gm

PS. I don't have gmail at work, and this might be a fun way to RP the interrogation. I'll let you know when I want you to take over, Matt. --Msallen 16:29, 15 December 2009 (EST)
There is no indication that any of them are making any headway toward escaping. The appear to pose no threat.
:: Listen (7+7 = 14) You hear the ambient noise of a disused grist mill. The creaking of wooden crankshafts, the scampering of rodents, etc.

You sense that she still does not believe your offers in regards to this. In fact, you see a laughter in her eyes as she you mention killing her employers. Not a superior sort of laughter, but definitely derisive. There is a strong sense of fatalism here. "I have no doubt you'd <i>try</i>."

You're pretty sure what is driving Cinammon's new reluctance, but you're unclear now as to what drove her to agreed in the first place.</i>
But you think we should go on the defensive? Why? What could be important enough to give them control of the battlefield?"

<i>Cinammon's eyes dart wildly between you and the three theives, who continue to whisper dire threats of retribution to both of you. She says nothing. </i>
