Kib's tactic is to be firm, but not unkind. We wants the Gnob to know that he has no intention of hurting him, but also makes no mistake about consequences should Gnob try to cut their throats at inopportune moments. He will protect Gnob from harm, and intends to release Gnob at a place of Gnob's choosing (within reason) once he's picked up enough of the language to be able to study on his own.

Kib is very good at emanating attitudes of trust, but he has no illusions about the Goblin's loyalty. In general, he will try to keep too many opportunities for escape from presenting themselves, but he is playing a light hand on this--he knows that too much mistrust is potentially as harmful as too little, so he will do his best to balance that fine line. -Slitherrr
