Hometown The Ulan

Einar the Defender is the Chief of the Tamerlane Tribe of The Ulan. He is the biological father of Mahina as well as Conall and Kendrew.

Family

The line of the Chiefs of the Tamerlane has remained within a single family since the tribe's reckoning. As the tribe is staunchly patriarchal, the line passes from father to son or nearest male relative. The line has yet to fail to produce a male heir. For "legal" purposes, the last name of the family would be the same as the clan, Tamerlane, but the tribe prefers to go by first name only with titles serving to denote a special honor. The Chief is always given a title which denotes a key element of his prowess or some other notable trait.

Lineage Notes

  • Simein the Pure:

During a bloody war with another tribe, Frent sent his infant son off with his Fresian wife to his wife's hometown where he lived until his early teenage years. He received training as a cleric in the Alexandrian church. When word was sent and Daniella returned with Simein, Simein was immediately married off to the daughter of a mercenary who had taken control of the rival tribe during the war. Simein was not pleased with this union as Francine was as ugly both inside and outside. Despite this, Simein fulfilled his duties as both a husband and later as Chief when his father retired. Francine had been carrying on an affair with her half-brother, Arthur, and when Simein's sister Meinte caught them, Francine slew her in the center of the village just as she began to speak. Francine counted on Simein's loyalty to prevent retribution, but Simein flew into a rage, denounced Francine as a heretic and beheaded her then and there. Arthur emerged semi-clothed from the forest and Simein beheaded him as well. Francine and Arthur's bodies were tossed into the forest while Meinte received a martyr's burial.

Simein went on a pilgrimage to purify his conscience. He returned to the church where he had originally began his training as a cleric. His mentor, the aged priest, bestowed upon him the title of paladin and honored him for his diligent work in the true way of Alexandria in the Ulan as most of the Ulan tribes were of a heretic offshoot of the Alexandrian church. Also while in town, he met up with his childhood friend Lahze Hatter and took her as his bride. He returned to the tribe a new man and lead them into a time of renewed prosperity which continued for the next 3 generations.

Of his two heirs, Kent died after contracting lycanthropy and passed the the title of Chief to his younger brother, Birry. Incidentally, Birry was also the only one whose paternity could be proven as Francine was bedridden and thus stuck in the town throughout his conception and pregnancy while Kent looked little like Simein (and thus some secretly doubted his paternity).

  • Anderly the Wanderer:

Anderly the Wanderer had a fetish for morbidly obese halfling women. When he was 16, he left the village with his sister Ramia to seek a bride. Ramia ended up marrying the head of the Arabelle town guard, Cid Stormblade, and the two adventured together. Anderly stayed in Arabelle and blew his father's money on drugs and alcohol. When his father summoned him back, the scout returned with news that Anderly had left town with a group of traveling halflings. Anderly returned to the village a few years later with his "wives"- 6 morbidly obese halfling women. The village was shocked and outraged as they did not believe Anderly's "pups" (as his children were snidely called) were fit to carry on the tribal line. As was the custom, Birry the Tenacious retired as town chief and handed the tribe over to Anderly. Anderly nearly drove the tribe into complete ruin as he, his wives, and his hoard of children consumed the tribe's resources with reckless abandon.

When Ramia returned with her husband and son to visit, she was mortified. With her husband's help, they removed Anderly from power and drove his clan out of town. Neither Cid nor Ramia could assume the role of Chief but their son, Tomas, could. As Tomas was still a child, Cid and Ramia served as his advisers and essentially ran the tribe and restored it. Well-trained and courageous like his parents, Tomas took control as Chief on his 18th birthday. His parents remained in the village and served as his trusted advisers until their deaths.

Tomas married the daughter of a fur trader and thus established the booming fur trade that continues to support the Tamerlane tribe.

History

Einar is the son of Tomas Bladestorm the Redeemer and Valencia Ryemooth, the daughter of a fur trader. Valencia died soon after giving birth to Einar's younger sister, Amie. Amie was born not long after Einar's 5th birthday. Einar was fiercely protective of his sister. Tomas died protecting his children during a raid on the village by another tribe. Einar, only 11 at the time, flew into a rage and joined the fight- slaughtering several of the grown invaders single-handedly. Towards the end of the battle, one of the Tamerlane tribe women took Amie as a hostage. She had turned her back on her tribe and organized the ambush. Furious, Einar rushed in to save his sister and the woman coldly slit Amie's throat. Einar killed the woman and rushed to assist Amie but she died in his arms. Since that day, Einar has had little but disgust and contempt for women other than his daughters, whom he treats like princesses. It has been rumored that Einar favors Lorelei above his other wives because she has the same hair color as his lost sister.

After the raid, 11-year-old Einar took control of the tribe as Chief. After burying his father and sister, he developed the "job" system within the tribe- everyone had a job, and everyone was expected to stick to that job. He threw all his energy into training and trapping. The Tamerlane tribe is quite well-off financially due to Einar's obsessive trapping during this time. As a teenager, Einar took several lovers but had no interest in marrying or producing an heir, much to the dismay of the tribe elders. When he was 21, he finally took one of his lovers as a wife- Gianna, the daughter of one of the elders. She was 14 years his senior but very much in love with him. It was an unspoken rule that the first of Einar's lovers to conceive his child would be the one he would marry: after years of earnest attempts, Gianna was the one who conceived first. Gianna and Einar were married though her pregnancy ended in miscarriage not long afterwards. Gianna suffered several miscarriages and was never able to produce an heir.

After raiding a tribe that had breached their tribe's borders, Einar happened upon Lorelei's family. The family gave Einar their youngest daughter, Lorelei, as "thanks" for disposing of the tribe that was bothering them and for continued protection against another nearby tribe. In reality, the family was happy to be rid of Lorelei as she suffered from disorganized schizophrenia and was a nearly constant burden on them. Einar was enthralled with the beautiful and bizarre Lorelei and took her immediately as a bride. She conceived soon after and bore him a son, Conall. Thankfully, the boy did not inherit his mother's illness but instead appeared to be the spitting image of his father. Try as she might, mental illness prevented Lorelei from adequately caring for Conall and this task fell to Gianna and her handmaidens.

While Einar was on a hunting trip, Gianna plundered money from some of the coffers and sent a trader to bribe other tribes with money to send wives for Einar. Not only did Gianna want the help from the other wives but she wanted someone, anyone, other than Lorelei to produce a heir as she feared Conall would grow up to be ill like his mother.

Einar returned from a hunting trip to see a beautiful, young blonde waiting for him- a gift of a wife from another tribe. The next day, two more beautiful blondes from other tribes joined her. Einar was amazed at his good luck but, not wishing to look a gift horse in the mouth, took them all as brides. Einar noted that none of them were smart, and one of them was particularly idiotic, but he wasn't too bothered by this as he already had an heir and did not care for women much other than sex objects anyway. All women became pregnant, and Lorelei became pregnant again. Einar could not believe his prosperity and enjoyed his new babies. During this time, Einar also discovered himself falling in love with Lorelei- still enchanted by her bizarre behavior. Scared by this attachment, he went away from the village on hunting trips more often.

Gianna, meanwhile, was jealous as well as furious for having to take on a vast bulk of the household responsibilities due to incompetency of the other wives. After Lorelei was pregnant again not long after the birth of Kendrew, Gianna bound Lorelei and beat her. She left Lorelei for dead in the middle of the forest that was, unbeknownst to her, near a common gnomish trade route to Arabelle.

When Einar returned, Gianna informed him that Lorelei had wandered off and she had personally looked for her but couldn't find her. Einar sent out a search party and became suspicious of Gianna when no trace was found of Lorelei. Gianna then informed Einar that Lorelei had been captured by another tribe and made up an area where Gianna said the tribe had been. Unfortunately for her, another tribe had recently moved into that area. Einar and the Tamerlane warriors went to war with that tribe. The rival tribe made one last push into the Tamerlane village and Gianna was killed in the conflict. In that same conflict, however, Conall had proven his battle-readiness just as his father had similarly when he was a child. They eliminated the rival tribe entirely and Conall began his formal training as a barbarian warrior.

Einar sent a scout to Arabelle to retrieve potential wives as a gift for Conall's 20th birthday. The scout did not return with a wife for Conall as he had spied Lorelei in East Arabelle and returned with her. The tribe celebrated and Einar was overjoyed at the return of the only wife he had ever loved. He retired soon after, passing the honor of Chief on to Conall despite his not having taken a wife yet, and wondered about the mysterious Mahina that Lorelei kept mentioning.

Present

Einar serves as one of the Tamerlane tribe elders and is a retired chief. He lives with his wife, Lorelei. His other wives live in their own village houses and he pays them little interest since the return of Lorelei. He advises his son, Conall, and never goes far from his house for fear that Lorelei will "wander off" again.

Trivia

  • Einar received some training as a blacksmith and silversmith from a traveling master who later settled within the tribe. He has commissioned, and assisted in the making, of silver pendant necklaces for his daughters and ceremonial swords for his sons.
  • Einar loves all of his children but does show some favoritism towards Conall and Kendrew because they are Lorelei's sons.
  • His favorite color is dark brown and thus he has outfitted the village in furniture made of dark hard woods that would fetch an enormous price outside of the Ulan.
