Everything on this page is from d20srd.com, Grapple and Improved Grab, unless otherwise noted.

Grapple (ignoring Improved Grab)

  • Grapple modifier: Base attack bonus + Strength modifier + special size modifier
  • To start a normal grapple (without Improved Grab):
    • Successful melee attack roll
    • You make a melee touch attack to grab the target
    • Make an opposed grapple check as a free action.
  • Opponents keep dex bonus for attacks from opponents who are grappling them, but lose it for attacks from anyone else.
  • You don’t threaten any squares while grappling.
  • You can attack with an unarmed strike, natural weapon, or light weapon against another character you are grappling, but you take a -4 penalty on such attacks.
  • Can cast spells while grappling, but only spells whose casting time is no more than 1 standard action and that have no somatic component. Requires a DC 20+spell level concentration check.
  • You can move half your speed (bringing all others engaged in the grapple with you) by winning an opposed grapple check.

Improved Grab

  • A successful hold does not deal any extra damage unless the creature also has the constrict special attack. If the creature does not constrict, each successful grapple check it makes during successive rounds automatically deals the damage indicated for the attack that established the hold.
  • When a creature gets a hold after an improved grab attack, it pulls the opponent into its space.
  • Touch attack is not necessary to start a grapple.
