Preconception: Lorelei's Story
Mahina is the daughter of Lorelei and Einar the Defender, former Reis of the Tamerlane duchy in southeastern Fresia.

Lorelei's mother's pregnancy was a difficult one, and from a very early age her parents thought her behavior as odd. As Lorelei came into her teens, she became a burden to her parents and they gave her as a gift to the head of the Tamerlane duchy, Einar, in exchange for protection and annexation of their homestead into the duchy.
Einar took Lorelei as a wife (primarily due to the failure of his first wife to produce an heir) and she bore him a son, Conall. This did not sit well with Einar's first wife, Gianna, who had miscarried numerous times and was never able to produce a child for Einar. Gianna also did not care for Lorelei because by adulthood, it was clear that Lorelei was "not right in the head" (disorganized schizophrenia) and while this did not bother Einar, Gianna did not care for having to carry more than her share of the duties as well as care for a child not her own (Conall).
