I agree with you that +1 HD is too big, but not sure that enormous bonuses to stats are the way to go. I'd rather just give them the Alertness Feat and +8 to survival and scent (which is double from regular dogs). +2 STR and CON and the endurance feat is probably good enough for the draft dog, and the war dog really needs to be stronger more than anything: a lightly armored halfling and probably 6-8 lances, plus any gear, while still only being encumbered such that he can move freely. +4 STR would be 17, which is more than enough. (Though I do agree the +1 HD is too much.)

Might want to provide full stat blocks for these dogs instead. There are two dog entries in the MM, one for a normal dog, and the other for a riding dog. The riding dog has +1 hit dice and +2 strength compared to the normal one. This could cause some confusion. --Msallen 11:47, 26 May 2009 (EDT)

Added more clarification, but I don't want to start putting up creatures until we have a template. --Detarame

Then lets make a template? --Msallen 17:41, 26 May 2009 (EDT)

I thought about these and I'm a little on the fence about these is that +1 HD is pretty big. It makes a riding dog more physically powerful than a light warhorse, which seems a little dramatic. What do you think of these bonuses?

  • Riding: MM riding dog +2 str, +2 con, +10 speed
  • Draft: MM riding dog +2 str, +4 con, endurance (or +4 str and no endurance?)
  • Tracking: MM normal dog +4 wisdom, +2 int, +6 survival (gives them +8 extra survival for tracking, +2 to spot and listen, and 6th level divine spells)
