Talk:Obelisks

Not in the mindset to be coherent in paragraph form.

  • There were and are nine obelisks: 8 "minor," of obsidian and one "major," of an unique white, marble-esq stone referred to as "Obelaster," a portmanteau of "Obelisk" and "Alabaster."
  • It is presumed the Eight Makers put them there, but no one is sure. During the Primal Age, before agriculture, populations were small enough that most of the Mainland was unexplored. It wasn't until the time of the Demi-Pantheon that maps were made and these mothers were discovered.
  • The eight are all identical in dimension, but not in detail. All are covered in an unknown script. The symbols are common to all nine obelisks, but are unique in positioning and orientation on each.
  • The minor obelisks are all on the mainland, on the coasts, at roughly the 4 cardinal and 4 secondary directions. In some cases the ruins of the minor 8 remain, and in others they are carted away during the post-Crusade years to be put to practical use. The Major Obelisk was, and its remains are, roughly in the center of the mainland, I think somewhere along the Fresian/Flannary border?
  • The first was unlocked by Antioch, who eventually styled himself Sorcerer-King, actually used a redonkulous UMD score to "hack" it open when the city was under siege.

Not much is known about how they functioned, as their power was vacated with Alexandria and so can't really be further studied. Most of what is understood is gleaned from inference, and the writings of Antioch and Marwynn. The function fact that follow are being applied to the Obelisks as a system, although most likely different obelisks had different functions - at the very least, the minor and major ones did. I'm not demarcating what did what: nobody alive knows, and possibly most the actors at the time poorly understood the forces they controlled.

  • They acted as a prison for the Dark Lord, or at least sealed shut his demiplane. A lot of the real trouble got rolling when Antioch unlocked the first Obelisk.
  • Antioch unlocked the first by chicanery, but its power allowed him - all but ignorant to the fundamentals of arcane power - to become one of the preeminent arcane casters of his day.
    • Antioch seems to have been absolutely ranged limited, and the Obelisk acted for him was as much tether as boon.
    • His Obelisk only collapsed after the Omnity: before that it functioned as his Wizard's Tower.
    • The remains were re-crafted in the much smaller, but still impressive, Arcane Tower that exists in the University of Hakan to this day.
  • Marwynn eventually unlocked a second one legitimately, and it allowed her to become one of the preeminent arcane casters in all of recorded history.
    • Marwynn was not likewise tethered. She was, for example, able to turn a province-sized lake system in the middle of the Mainland into the Wydmoor Swamp, despite being on the Alexian coast.
    • Although Antioch was the first to UNLOCK an Obelisk, Marwynn was the first to BREAK one - the one she unlocked shattered.
  • They (the Major Obelisk) was the conduit from which Alexandria assumed the Omnity, after which it and the seven remaining lesser ones all shattered.

I think that covers everything?
