Mithral coins are twice the value of platinum!
To determine the additional price for the mithral (as compared to the normal item's price), use the non-mithral item's original weight and multiply that by 500 gp per pound.
Since the final product weighs half as much, mithral is 1Kgp/lb, which comes out to 20gp/coin. This implies that mithral is as common or even more common than platinum, since the latter isn't used as a raw material (only as a currency), while the former would almost immediately be used to make fancy stuff upon extraction (just ignore armor pricing in this calculation, because it is wacko, which it needs to be for mithral armor to be worth buying). Anyway, I just thought this was cute. -Slitherrr
- Scratch the above calculation--it's 500gp/lb (given here), so it's exactly the value of platinum (and thus even more likely to be a more common metal). That's weird, but I guess we can handwave with wastage and labor costs -Slitherrr
Also, I never noticed before looking at this that Agile half-plate weighs five more pounds than regular half-plate. Whuh? -Slitherrr

- Sure, work away from by supporting better abstractions within a system. I feel like the Tome of Awesome's strength is in pointing out things that are broken by showing the interactions between the parts. Anyway the bloviations above were me trying to figure out how much that 10lbs of Mithral from the chest are worth, before I found the link that says literally how much it's worth. The consequence of Mithral probably being the same rarity as platinum is just an oddity that we'll all completely ignore unless we can make some hilarious or ingenious way for it to make sense--I definitely understand the reason for a value being what it is for game-balance reasons given its particular game properties. -Slitherrr
- Honestly, it would not hurt my feelings to see the cost of fantastic materials increase by like a factor of 5 or 10. These are the things I never have to really think about very much in a low money setting designed for low to mid level characters. -gm
